Recommended Posts

Tomorrow I am going dove hunting for my first time. What do you guys take with you dove hunting other than your shot gun? and what do you wear?

Food, water, a wing and a prayer. HA HA I wear camo just as I do for any big game.

Shotgun, shells, water, blaze orange vest, safety glasses, and snake chaps. Always keep ice in the car to cool down the birds once I'm done.

I wear camo, and whatever you do, DO NOT forget the bug spray.

My bird dog (Lab) is a good thing not to forget. Shes one heck of a dog. Make sure you bring enough shells.... it sucks to run out with birds flying. I suck with a shotgun so i need a case to get my limit

It's always good to estimate that it will take a box of shells to knock down a limit... Then add another box. I take my Mojo dove, Dove-n-air, and a few tree clip decoys. I find that it's much easier to get the birds flying where you want them with some strategically placed decoys. Need ice and a cooler, some good sharp game shears, a Thermacell for the bugs, ziplock gallon size bags for cooling the meat, license, water, trail mix and jerky, my bird vest and my favorite folding dove chair...

Oh and I wear camo... But if I get rained on with lead I switch to a blaze cap and vest.

I freeze a bottle of water and keep it in my vest for the birds til I get back to the truck to put them on ice.

I bought an older Ithaca SKB 20ga O/U 1960's era shotgun this summer. It weighs about 5lbs, recoil is minimum, points/swings and balances well and has been absolutely lethal so far. I will probably never shoot anything else for doves. Light, fast, and vintage- that's my style! Plus, it's easier to find cheap 20ga ammo!

I have an older Savage Fox double barrel side by side in 20 ga. It is deadly on doves, quail, rabbits, whatever I point it at really. I originally bought it for my Dad and I got it when he passed. Love that gun means a lot to me...

I used a Savage pump in 20 gauge I bought in the 80's from Yellow Front new for $99. I think it is a Model 67? I had a new firing pin put in it last year and had a series of FTF's on opening morning. Makes me wonder if the few drops of Kroil I put on the extractor spring got into the firing pin and mixed with some residue and gunked it up.
