ready2hunt Report post Posted August 27, 2013 I have found that covering myself in honey is a great deterrent- like a natural bear repellent. Jk It is just as dangerous than any other form of hunting here in AZ. You just have to be aware of your surroundings at all times. Both of those rifles are great (i personally prefer 180gr in my 30-06 when bear hunting) The only time a bear is truly a danger to you is if it is not at all scared by your presence. That would mean its a sow with cubs around or it sees you as a potential meal/threat. Even sows with cubs will run 99% of the time. I don't know anyone who is overly dramatic about the dangers of bear hunting but I will be the first to say the COMPLACENCY = DANGER. Be smart and you'll be perfectly fine,
Old Buck Report post Posted August 27, 2013 I have had lots of close encounters with bears. It can be exciting when they pop their teeth and woof! One of the most exciting encounters that I have watched was when my son shot his first bear with a bow. After the shot it decided to exit the area by way of the trail he was standing on. He got off the trail and it passed by at a few feet. For a second it looked like it was going for him, but it was just trying to get away. In reality you have a greater risk of injury driving to and from your hunting location than when you are out bear hunting.

rossislider Report post Posted August 28, 2013 I've hunted both and find lions to be much more intimidating. I think bears are much less likely to stalk people and aren't nearly as stealthy and quiet as lions.

muledeerarea33? Report post Posted August 31, 2013 I had a higher chance of of my plane crashing on my flight to Cali last week, or being attacked by a "California bear" if you catch my drift hahaha, than you do from a bear or lion.
couesmagnet Report post Posted August 31, 2013 I treed 2 good sized bears this year alone by stalking in close and then jumping out of the bushes at the last second screaming and waiving my hands with nothing but a fishing pole in my hand. The only dangerous bears live in new mexico, and that's only cause they are extra curious, ive found. I have made a habit out of charging bears when i can get in close, and scare them good and real quick. Fun stuff.
