Opening day Blues!! UPDATED

Recommended Posts

The day started out according to plan, Brad met me and we were off to the spot I had planned out days ago. The plan was to work our way up the ridge to a saddle I had seen several good bucks travel over for the past several seasons. As we reached the AMBUSH site, I peered over the edge and 450 yards down the ridge I spotted several bucks feeding. That turned into 6 bucks and two does. After watching them for awhile I realized they were not going to top the saddle we were in, but the next one over. After adjusting our position we were in the other saddle waiting for them to cross, they never did. While waiting I watched a troop of Coatimundis. As time would have it Brad would have to depart for family obligations by noon. As we worked our way back to the trucks we pushed up two does and a heard of Javelina. Another doe almost ran us over as she topped a rock pile at 8 ft.

After Brad left I repositioned myself and started glassing trying to find those bucks, I never did. I decided to relocate to another canyon, after driving to the top lookout spot I started glassing and right away I spotted several Coues. Most were does but two were small bucks (too far to stalk) for their size.

I decide it's time to start down the canyon. I turn the key and nothing, the truck wont start. I cleaned the battery terminals and check all the connections annnnd NOTHING. I sigh of relief as I check my phone and there is 2 bars. I called the wife and then realized she can't get anywhere near me. I then tried to get others without avail, "all circuits are busy" are you kidding me!!!!! As I sit in my dead truck trying get signal again I look down and on the passenger floor board I see my DeWalt Impact gun. It comes to me "take the battery apart." I took the battery pack out of the casing and wire it to the truck battery. It worked, I cant believe it actually worked. McGiver you got nothing on me!!! I drove straight to O'Rileys and had to drop $100 for a new battery. The Quest for the Coues Deer continues tomorrow. Hopefully with better results.

OK guys here is the complete run down:

I took my DeWalt 20 volt 1.5 amp battery and with my set of security bits and a Leatherman I took the screws out. After taking the case off and identifying the positive and negative leads to the battery, I then took some #10 braided wire and with the Leatherman stripped off the ends. Again using the Leatherman I loosened the terminals to the truck battery and connected the wires. With crossed fingers and a prayer I turned the key. It started right up.

Here is a shot of the security screws i took out.

User of the method of jumping your truck battery assumes all risks involved!

You jumped your truck with a DeWalt battery?????? I can't believe that actually worked!!! AWESOME! I would have thought that idea was so ridiculous that I wouldn't have even tried. hahaha! Way to think outside the box.

It may have not been the day you expected but I assure you it was a lot better than the day I had at work! Good luck tomorrow! Hope you connect on a good buck!

My oldest son beat the ever loving crap out of my truck today. I sent him off to scout for deer and bear and he asked if he could drive up the road a bit. As my middle son, Nick and I got out of a blind after about 8 hours, and packed up our stuff, Matt drives in right to the tank, that doesn't even have a road to it. Scratches from the headlights and hood to the tail lights, 3 dents in the cab and a HUGE dent in the back quarter panel... This just after he mangled a 88 Toyota truck... This morning all I could thing about were bear and coues, and tonight all I can think about are repairs I can't can afford to fix, and a mindset I can't seem to get into.

Sorry to vent, and don't mean to derail the thread, but my hunt was absolutely ruined by my own kid who just can't learn when or how to slow the "F" down....

OUCH!!! Sorry to hear that Coach! I would loose my mind if somebody did that to my truck!

Sound like your son needs to get used to walking for now on. Good luck on the repairs. Hope they don't cost you too much!

That is amazing, I will carry a freaking rechargeable drill. I am with Millhouse, can you post some pics on how you did it. I am pretty handy but just cannot visualize how you would do that jump.

I would not have even thought it possible. Might even say I would have had to see it to believe it but I know Steven wouldn't make up something that crazy. Good thinking and I bet someone above might have had a hand in it as well. Other than that it sounded like a good day to me with all the sightings of deer and especially the pigs.

Good luck today Steve and please share it with us later. :)

A jump box is good to have. I bought mine for work but carry it while I'm out in the hills. I use it to run the pump on my home made portable shower too. I'm a fan of interstate batteries for all my vehicles.

Interstate's are great. I bought the Die Hard's because they are AGM and had the most CCA in the Group 65. Sears in the East Valley worked with me on the price and saved me maybe another $45.

They probably weighed a good 10 pound more that the Wal-Mart one's I replaced which were going on three years old.

Steve is the man! He put me on more bucks yesterday than I saw most of the season last year. Thanks for sharing your spot with me and hopefully we can get it done another day.

When you called and said you needed help I was immediately thinking you had found the big boy and needed help packing him out! Sorry I was already tied up with family obligations otherwise I would have dropped everything and come to help. Glad you figured that out...still amazed!

As a testament to CWT, if Steve hadn't reached anyone else or figured anything out I was ready and waiting to post a call for help here and I know Steve would have had help within a few minutes!

Reminds me I need to put my jump box back in the truck... :D
