muledeerarea33? Report post Posted August 23, 2013 my wifes 770 in .243 shoots great!! the bolt lift really sucks, the gun is cheap all around, but accuracy is good. she pops soda cans out to 350 yards with it. as far as scopes go, some people have great eyes and can see and shoot well out of cheap glass at any distance (like my dad) my self on the other hand have the worst eye sight ever and need better quality to compete. it all depends on you, as to how nice of gear you need. Agreed, its a decent rifle and it can definitely get the job done, but my biggest issue is with the bolt. There seems to be a lot of slop. If I pull the bolt back to load a second round, the bolt seems to stick or jam when im pushing it forward again. Sometimes I have to jiggle it a bit to chamber the round. If I need to place a second shot in a hurry this can be an issue. I'm not sure, but maybe its worse for me because I'm a lefty and I roll the rifle to its side when loading that second round. At this point I'm set on buying a new rifle. I just need to decide which one.
DesertBull Report post Posted August 23, 2013 I was lucky enough to pull a Whitetail tag for an October hunt here in Arizona. Im almost 40, but this will be my first deer hunt (daddy didn't hunt and all that), so I'm trying to do as much research as possible so I don't go home empty handed. It's ok to go home empty handed.

Its not just cause your a lefty, hers does it too, hard bolt lift and hard closing. lol almost as bad as a warmed up mosin nagant! Ive heard complaint and have seen people post fixes but for us its gonna stay how it it. I think alot has to do with the amount of plastic on the gun and the lack of quality when built. roninflag Report post Posted August 23, 2013 I shoot a Remington model 700 in 300 wm, but you don't have to go that high. .243, 25-05, .257, 270, .308, 7 mm Mag, 30-06, and a 300 wm are just some of the more common calibers that will cleanly take a coues out to 300 yards and much, much farther. I say go with a .270, it's very flat shooting, accurate, has a good bullet selection, and doesn't kick that much. Plus, it's got a great history hunting coues thanks to Jack O'Conner (read up on him if you haven't already). Look at cameralandny.com for a scope, they've got some great deals for good glass. And then, once you have your rifle and scope, SHOOT IT. A LOT. Aggrree. Danny the reason i suggested the ones i did. is because the you need to shoot it a lot. remington 700 243 varmint. the 770 does not have an adjustable trigger. you can not rebarrel it. it is a disposable gun. a rifle lasts a long time ;also if you decide on something different you get 80% or more on the dollar or more . a good rifle and scope are insurance. a must for me in order to invest the time and effort to hunt. i would think of it this way..... you only have to hunt and shoot better than 86% of the others out there or be lucky. lucky is good too. ron
kazpilot25 Report post Posted August 23, 2013 Oh boy, if you're getting a new rifle I would get the Tikka T3 Lite WITHOUT A DOUBT!! It has the smoothest action of any out of the box rifle you can buy and is deadly accurate. I LOVE MINE!! I've got a custom Savage 111 280 Ackley Improved and shoots lights out. But that's after a lot of upgrades. There's nothing left stock on that gun but the action.
hesbinrubn Report post Posted August 28, 2013 Great responses on here for you. Just follow and you will be successful. Remember many times it can be blistering hot on these October hunts. Cold drinks, shade, and a small spray bottle of water can make you more comfortable enduring the "sunburn special". Oh yeah and sunscreen of course!
Antmo23 Report post Posted August 28, 2013 ^^^^^ "sunburn special", I like that. Heck, last year it was the "windburn special"!
Danny Report post Posted August 28, 2013 And I'm assuming we shouldn't wear sunblock either right ?
Antmo23 Report post Posted August 28, 2013 Depends on the weather. If it's sunny and hot, absolutely. Don't worry too much about scent control, you'll be sweating buckets already if its hot, what's a little extra scent going to do? Might as well save yourself the pain of a sunburn on your neck/face.
