ylclaret Report post Posted August 19, 2013 I've been kicking the idea around of starting a big buck contest, just for fun, within my family and group of close friends but I'm wondering what the curve should be between white tail and mule deer. I'm thinking somewhere around 60 inches. So a 90" coues would be a tie with 150 inch mule deer... Is that too wide of a gap? What do you guys think?
PRDATR Report post Posted August 20, 2013 It needs to be two separate classes.
gotcoues Report post Posted August 20, 2013 I would compare P&Y and B&C for both and come up with your number based on those two.
ylclaret Report post Posted August 20, 2013 Good call, SCI has the minimum coues score at 80 and desert mule deer at 151. So 71 inches for the difference. SCI is the only one of the three that uses straight gross scores right?
oz31p Report post Posted August 20, 2013 Why include people who don't hunt coues?
Gr8 White Jr Report post Posted August 20, 2013 I would compare P&Y and B&C for both and come up with your number based on those two. This is exactly how they should be compared. Then you can just use percentages of how far under or over they are. -Tracy
ready2hunt Report post Posted August 20, 2013 It's a good idea. On my wife's side of the family we all have a $10 buy in for coues. Whoever tags the first buck gets the pot. Whiles it's not about size its still fun and pays for the trip. I am hoping this year I win it haha.
StickFlicker Report post Posted August 20, 2013 There's 20 points difference between Coues typical and mule deer typical in both P&Y and B&C. I have no respect for the SCI records program (no issue with the organization, just their records program), so I have no idea what they do.

Good luck!

I have no respect for the SCI records program, so I have no idea what they do. When I looked up B&C minimum entry scores typical coues is 100 and typical mule deer is 180, and P&Y minimum entries are 70 and 145. Are you looking at something different that I should check out? StickFlicker Report post Posted August 20, 2013 Sorry...you are correct. Let that be a lesson for you kids. Don't drink and type!! There is 80 points difference between the two species in B&C and 75 in P&Y. You could add one of these numbers to a Coues score as a "handicap", or your idea of making it a percentage over minimum isn't a bad one either.
