New Rifle Help!!!!

Recommended Posts

OK GUYS!!

I posted a reply on the topic "Your Fist Rifle?" I mentioned that I was thinking about a new rifle and handing down my Rem.721 to my son. WELL!! Ever since then my mind is running WILD! What CAL.? What rifle? I have gotten to the point it is driven me crazy!! I have kinda been out of the loop since about the time Short Mags started coming out. I have been primarily a bow hunter for a while now. I would like to try a Short Mag but not sure why? Probably because it is new to me. Being honest here.

This rifle will be used for just coues hunting and needs to reach out and touch something. I do shoot out to longer yardages. I do not mind carrying around the weight of a med. or heavy barrel. Actually I prefer to shoot them. I also do my own reloading. I was thinking 25-06 or one of the Short Mags but as you can see I really have no idea. Please let me know what y'all like to shoot and why. May be this will help me some. Or it my make me think more and that hurts so i hope not.

Thanks for any help you can give. There are to many to choose from :)

My 721 is a 270win. I was thinking the 270 wsm if I go with the short mag. And I love the 140gr Accubond!

I'm primarily a bowhunter myself, but when I rifle hunt nothing beats the 30-06, from knock down power to long range shooting, this caliber has it all, not to mention the wide range of loads it is available in. I'm currently using Hornady 165 grain light magnums (-6.6" @ 300 yards.)

From varmints to Moose nothing beats the tried, the true, the tested 30-06. B)

270 wsm, can't go wrong if you are going with the short mag. Other choice would be .280 remington. You can use the 140 grain accubond in both.

257 WBY- Flatter and a little less recoil than the 270 WSM, but less energy, with bullets of similar BC and SD.

264 Win Mag- Remington is to chamber their Sendero in a limited number this year.

270 WSM

That said, I chose to have a 6.5 WSM made (still waiting to be completed) for a coues rifle.

A 25 WSM would be similar in performance to the 257 WBY

My 721 is in 30-06 and I've loved it for years. Have thought about retiring it and getting something else, but never did decide what "new" rifle to get. Finally narrowed it down to either a 25-06 or a 7mm. Then along came the short mags. Still not convinced they are better, but the balistics look better. But what do I know...

I just picked up a Browning 7mm a bolt stainless stalker with the BOSS system. I had been looking for one for some years now that I could build into a loooong range gun. You can make your own loads with lightweight bullets to really reach out there, or load them heavy for larger deer or elk. Take a look at the Browning with the BOSS system. With this you can tune the barrel to whatever bullet you are using. I already have one in 300 win mag and it is a tack driver. This is my third a-bolt and I have had good luck with all of them. Check out all of these different bullets available for reloading. You can also pick up a wealth of knowledge of this reloading forum. David

I have a 300 wsm and a 257 weatherby, either is a great gun, the 257 kicks less and you can load it with light bullets for varmints and heavier bullets for deer, antelope etc. The brass is about 20 bucks a box.

YOu cant really compare the 257 weatherby and the 25 wssm, the 87 gr bullet in the weatherby is almost 400 fps faster with about 2 inches less drop than the 25 wssm, there are rumors that they are discontinuing that round(25 WSSM) due to lack of popularity. AG

I shot my Moose with a 30-06 shooting 180gr nosler partitions. It took four solid shots to finally put him on the ground...........I don't know if anything else would have done it faster or with less shots?

I like the tried and true 7mm and the 300 win mag. My coues gun is the dependable .270. My scope failed on my 300 win. in Alaska, so I used my buddy's 30-06 for my Moose. With that said....I would spend more money and thought on which scope to put on your new rifle than which caliber! just my $.02, JIM>

If you do your own reloading go for the 257 Wby.Magnum or the 270 or the 308 or the 30-06 or.............well all of those are excellent for coues.Whatever you get good luck and remember to aim for the vitals.Blessings.

You are not gaining much here

My 270win has worked well for me.I think it is more just a chance to try something new and to work on some new loads on a new rifle and to pass on my old faithful to my son. You did bring up a great point I think it is time to pull out the Nosler book and do some research there.

Thanks again Everyone!
