CouesWhitetail Report post Posted August 13, 2013 Sure looks like a sonoran desert toad to me. We got out every year during the rains to look for them. I think they are cool! Our dogs (so far) don't mess with them. They certainly do have toxic substances that they can secrete, so don't let your dog (or kids) lick them! But as long as you aren't licking them, they are not dangerous!
naturegirl Report post Posted August 14, 2013 UPDATE My Yorkie (15 lb) decided last night to go after one of these toads. I'm guessing it did not taste good because he was spitting, shaking his head, and pawing at his face. I washed his mouth out with water which he really enjoyed (not!). I slept with him thinking he may die during the night, but nope he's alive and kicking and the 1st thing out the door this morning he was looking for the toad, which makes me think he did not learn his lesson. I wish they made shock collars in his size because I'd use it. He has this strong inherent characteristic to go after small things (gophers, lizards, baby rabbits) and he is always a very determined dog. Ughh.
