GRONG Report post Posted June 8, 2004 (edited) I've been shooting my bow a fair amount lately and I can't help but squirm in anticipation for the upcoming fall. All the stuff I've learned over this past winter's hunting season has got me chomping at the bit to set up my stands over a couple killer scrapes! I'll be in the woods all of later Dec and January trying my best to stick my first hard antlered Coues buck with a bow. .......sometimes it feels good just to talk about it you know. Rembrant Report post Posted June 8, 2004 It's OK to talk about it. I understand. Sometimes us guys just need to get it out in the open. I have some things going on out in the whitetail woods, but it's not enough. After January was a good time to walk the snow and find pockets of deer to patern. Yet there is still a lot of time through the summer to kick around and keep learning. I AIN"T GETTIN OUT THERE ENOUGH!! I did get out last week and drive all the way to one of my favorite places on top of a giant mountain and drop some salt. I'm hoping I get a rifle tag there. That was hard, hot and dry - it's way different than Dec. Makes you wonder how these deer get through the summer - and where do they get water in some of these places? The mineral lick should help them out. I'm loving the bowhunts. If I don't get drawed for anything, I will be quite content bowhunting Mr. Coues. I could go on and on.... Thanks Josh, I needed that. More D Report post Posted June 8, 2004 I'm in the same boat. I have not been out nearly enough....or practiced enough. I feel guilty just writing it. But I did get out this last weekend to check a hole that I ran across the second to last day of this Jan bow season. I also walked away amazed. Happy that they still had water(probably with the help of the rancher), but very amazed. I don't know how they do it. Very dry and hot but it looks like a good spot! Ever since taking up bow hunting I do not mind so much if I don'tget draw for a deer tag. I just do not get to hunt with my best hunting partner, my wife. I can NOT wait either, I can already tell this is going to be a great year!
coues addict Report post Posted June 8, 2004 Josh Ya, I know what you mean, I have also been shooting my bow lately. I have an embankment that sit exactly 83 yards from my back porch. I would probably never shoot that far at an animal, but, I actually put an 83 yd. sight pin on and have been shooting a target! I am grouping about 12"-16'' at 83 yards. I am realizing that any wind makes a huge differance with carbon arrows, but its still a kick in the butt.I have got my groups at fifty yards down to around 4''- 6'' fairly consistently. I hope I get to go this Dec. or maybe next January.Good luck in the Draw and maybe You will be writing another awesome hunt story for all of us to enjoy, but this time, maybe with Your bow! TREESTANDMAN Report post Posted June 8, 2004 Man, you guys are dedicated hunters. I usally wait till early august before I wipe the dust off my bow and start practicing. I know what you guys mean about being excited for the archery hunting season coming up and especially the rut! From tips posted on this website, doing my own scouting, and with the use of some trail cameras that have become my most valued possesions, I feel like I have become a much better hunter this past year. I think that now I will be able to pass on the smaller bucks and hold out for a trophy, something I have never been able to do in the past. I'm excited to try some new experiments during the rut involving the use of decoys, scents, calling and the use of trail cameras.
standman Report post Posted June 9, 2004 I've had the itch for a while now. I've been shooting every day and daydreaming of the upcoming season. Yet I have to wait clear till January since I filled my tag this past January. So I'm hoping for an elk tag this fall as this will help with the wait if my area doesn't burn up. I live in the White Mountains and as I type a new fire has started up by Big Lake. I can see the smoke out my window. So please be careful while out and about scouting. NexToLast Report post Posted June 9, 2004 Yeah I'm tweaked too. I've been spending to much time looking at maps in the evening, instead of doing things that really need to get done. However, I find more than enough time to shoot my bow; seriously I have been shooting more this year than the past several. Also carry five gallons of water 3 miles every other day. I'm almost hoping not to get drawn for elk, in order to devote my time off learning more about my favorite whitetail area. Oh yeah, I definitely "can't wait". P.S. Josh you gunna be at the Happening in Williams come July.
GRONG Report post Posted June 10, 2004 Nextolast, I'll be there. Not sure if I'll be there buying antlers again though. The market sucks right now. I usually don't like to shoot that shoot cause there is so many people there. I'm an instinctive archer and it only takes me about 20 seconds at each target so I usually get behind 4 guys that use every gadget that you can possibly have and that take 10 minutes to shoot one target. I don't have anything against those guys it's just not my style. I can do all 4 courses in a day if guys let me through. Man I sound bitchy, sorry, I'm really not. I broke my string the other night so I haven't been out shooting for the past few. Just got a new one and can't wait to get out tomorrow night. I don't know about you guys but shooting the 3D shoots in the summer is the best practice I've ever had. Shooting at my square Eternity Target just doesn't seem to do it for me. I'm gonna hit the mtn tomorrow and see if I can find some fresh Coues sheds. One will do actually, I'm not that greedy. Josh PS: Nextolast, what's your name? It wasn't in your profile. galiuro mountain man Report post Posted June 10, 2004 Well, I shoot all year long. I shoot at least 10 arrows per bow every day. Only break this year was in Jan. when I was triing to get a cat. I am hoping to get to some shoots this summer. I got both bows punchin tacs, and I am ready to get after these deer. Will anyone be at the Sunrise shoot? I will be there, along with my family. Anyways, just cant wait for August!! GMM
coues addict Report post Posted June 11, 2004 Hey GMM Sounds like Your '' Pumped'' and ready to go! I was wondering what kind of bows you shoot ? It sounds like you are like me and you shoot all the time.I usually don`t shoot every day, but, I do shoot every week. Where do You guys go to shoot these 3d shoots? Maybe You could email me and I could come over there sometime and go to one of those shoots. Are they strictly instintive or what? Basically, I shoot targets, rabbits, and whatever else I can find to practice on. Hey good luck this year Coues Addict
galiuro mountain man Report post Posted June 12, 2004 Oh yeah, Im ready to go, I love the Aug. hunt!! I shoot compounds, one Mc Pherson and one Pearson. I shoot every day, and now I am trying to decide which bow will be my primary bow, and which will be my backup. Well there are shoots almost every weekend around AZ, you just have to look at archery shops and ranges to find out when and where. The shoot in Sunrise is over the 4th of July weekend. I just entered this week, so I will be there. It is supposed to be a really good shoot, and there are lots of different things you can enter in. I just want to go and have fun. NexToLast Report post Posted June 12, 2004 Josh you shoot a compound our stick bow? Don't know if I am going to make it to Williams, but going to Sunrise come July 4 weekend. Haven't been to that shoot for several years. Good news is I'm making the transition in moving over that way perminantly in about a year and half or so, talk about being excited! GRONG Report post Posted June 13, 2004 I shoot an Oneida Aero Force and love it. No sights just a rubber flipper rest and fingers. 2 Coues bucks with it so far. I'm really gonna try to make that Sunrise shoot, I haven't been there since '98 I think. I work every wknd around Show Low and the Wht Mtn Rez so I'll be in the area but just not sure if I'll be able to make the shoot. That's a real tough wknd to try and get off of work. Jeff, have I met you before, are you Dave Anderson's (fire fighter from Phx) relative? Josh PS I didn't find any Coues antlers on Thursday but I saw several deer and found 2 fresh elk antlers. Giddy-up.
NexToLast Report post Posted June 15, 2004 Josh, Yeah, that would be me. Hope you can make it to the shoot. It's going to be a good time, and a privilage to shoot in what I think is one of the most beautiful places in the state. Going to spend a few days before the shoot in New Mexico and then head over to the Rez. Maybe I'll see you there. Jeff
GRONG Report post Posted June 19, 2004 Hey good to have you on the forum Jeff. Well I hope to make the shoot although I'll probably be pumping poo instead. I'll try though. Josh
