BASS Report post Posted October 26, 2006 My pronghorns are a few years old, and are seeing their last year I think. There are seams ripping, and the soles are getting worn down. I also had to have missedagain and my sister bring down another pair of insoles last weekend for them because my feet were killing me. I am going to buy another pair and try to break them in before my javilina hunt, they are the best boots I have ever owned. BTW I wear them daily to work and are almost worn year round. catclaw Report post Posted November 15, 2006 I found the Pronghorns just like any other Chinese made boot, too soft and not very durable. The only Danners that are worth a hoot are the ones that are made in Portand and they are not cheap. I have a pair of Santiams. I won't buy a boot with any nylon showing- the cactus just goes right through them. I have worn out a pair of Cabelas Canadas (Meindl) and now have their Alaskans. They are outstanding boots. I can also highly recommend the Lowa boots- Schnees sells one variety they call the sheep hunter. You can go UP from there depending on your crampon needs. I never had a pair of Rockys that lasted more than two or three trips without tearing a sole or splitting a seam. I am HARD on stuff- I even need to send back my Badlands pack as it is falling apart! Maybe I should order all titanium gear from hear on out!
crazy4COUES Report post Posted November 15, 2006 I have been considering trying a new pair of boots. I have recently been using the Danner Pronghorn uninsulated for the last couple years, but only seem to get one season out of them before the sole wears out or they start to leak a little. Has anybody tried these boots made by Cabelas? I like the idea of them being lite and fast break in period. I imagine they must be pretty tough also. What do you think? David http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/template...s&noImage=0 DAVID Yes I have GOOD news about CABELAS brand boots. I have bought several different styles. They were all built with quality, double, triple sewn. Lightweight and usually break in in about 2-3 days. I am currently using the CABELAS TROPHY SERIES lace to toe uninsulated (LG-81-1470). They are AWESOME and I highly recomend them. I liked them so much I went and bought a similar boot for work. The CABELAS GORE TEX steel Toe work boot lace to toe (LG-81-1925) and they are just as light even with the steel toe. I had to put a gel insole in to help the footbed. If you have a CABELAS store near you I would recommend stopping by and trying on a pair. Hope this helps.
Red Rabbit Report post Posted November 18, 2006 I like these better than any pair I've had so far. Great support, comforatble, easy to break in, rubber rand protects against rock gouging, no Cordura panels to transmit catus needles and dust. Gore-Tex, no insulation. Redman Report post Posted November 20, 2006 My pair of pronghorns purchased in Sept are trashed. They have been worn in the filed for approximately 20 days this year, I will be testing how good the Danner warranty is after Jan. Redman
SilentButDeadly Report post Posted November 20, 2006 Merrel XCR Chameleons, light hikers that wear like a running shoe. (My other hunting shoes ARE my running shoes - aisics trail runners). I hike 10-20 miles a week with my dog shed hunting. I find that mid boots are too cumbersome, heavy, and restrictive. I wore White's Smokejumpers for 5 years as a Wildland firefighter - they are the toughest (and possibly the heaviest) boot you can buy, spendy @ $400 a pair but completely rebuildable for another $100-250. The Whites are good if you are carrying a 50 pound pack and a 20 pound chainsaw (So I'd assume that translates to hauling out a heavy load of game). www.whitesboots.com I do not wear my White's anymore, even when I am hunting. I got into the Go-light style a few years ago from a friend who hiked the Pacific-Crest Trail (Mexico to Canada). Kill the weight, save your knees and your ankles. Suggested reading (for the light hiking aspect - not much else for you huntin' folk here): http://www.rayjardine.com/ The guy is legendary in climbing circles for executing some of the most difficult rock faces in the world - now he just hikes/bikes/paddles around in record time using his light gear techniques. He hiked the Pac-Crest in 3 months (thats 2700 miles for an average of 30 miles a day) at the age of 49.
Becker Report post Posted November 20, 2006 I am dissappointed in Danner's warranty. Littlebear and I have the danners and busted out some seems on them. they basically told us to bend over a take it, if you know what I mean. I will probably not buy another pair. In my opinion the stitching is one of the most important parts. Afterall that holds the boot together. If they wont cover that than...hasta danner...Hello MOON SHOES.... flagcoueskiller Report post Posted December 12, 2006 Ditto on the Vasque Sundowners. Absolutely incredible. Mine are finally through and I am simply going to buy another pair. They take awhile to break in though. I am going to Mexico day after Xmas so I bought a pair of Danners that look to be easy to break in. So far so good. Anyone who buys Vasque Sundowner will not be disappointed. Joe
mikep35 Report post Posted December 15, 2006 I have a pair of Cabelas boots that I've used consistently for 4 years! They're the only hunting boots I own! I've had them resoled once. They are the best. I can't say enough about them.
