BackwoodsHunter Report post Posted July 30, 2013 Considering trying to backpack into one of the wilderness areas in august. Anybody ever hunted any of the wilderness areas? What would the quality of the bow hunt be? Not asking for secret spots, just suggestions on places people think would be a decent spot to try to get off the road and chase deer. ready2hunt Report post Posted July 30, 2013 It's all about water and shelter in that region. Lots of great spots with some shooters but just find good consistent water sources and start there. You'll see them and then the draws they hit to travel and then you'll see the places they bed. There are some rugged nasty places with a few trophys that hang out till dark. Good luck
rcdinaz Report post Posted July 30, 2013 You can see most of the consistent water sources on a good set of maps or google earth. It can be very rough and the deer seem to move into places that are near impossible to reach pretty quickly in the steep, cliff type areas. Nothing new for hunting coues but it seems like a pretty tough area for a bow hunt since some of the roads can really limit what you can get to even hiking. I guess you have to decide right off if you will stay low in the desert or move up high. The big frustration up on the tops is you may see deer in an area you just can't get to. Also, last year it was hot like never going to sleep in that weather kind of hot. Good luck hope you get on them right away!
GotBowAz Report post Posted July 30, 2013 One other note, the no-see-ums (tiny little biting fly) are out in full force in the high dessert areas. I got chewed up last weekend forgetting about them nasty little beasts and im still paying for it!! if your not high in the pines you might consider a good fine screen head net and keeping your body covered which really makes for a hard hunt in the heat. The noise near your ears alone from them will be enough to drive you nuts. GBA
reganranch Report post Posted July 30, 2013 Yeah this sounds miserable hiking around in 23 during August, sounds like a self-induced suckfest especially the hiking part involved past 10 a.m. Find a good water source sit in brush blind or commercial one and you will increase your odds of seeing deer and decrease your chances of seeing multiple snakes.
