elkhunter Report post Posted October 3, 2006 Spent the weekend in unit 27, my roomate's brother had an archery cow tag out there. The rut was off the hook!! Since I couldn't hike much (crushed my knee in June...been in wheelchair/crutches for 3 months and JUST started walking 2 weeks ago) I spent the whole weekend glassing from one vantage point and saw many many elk, I couldn't get many pictures because the sun was beaming right at us and the camera just doesnt cut it. I did happen to glass up the biggest 5x5 bull I've ever seen, I'd give him a 320+ for a 5x5! We also picked up a shed that could possibly be from the same bull, cept the bull now has a g-3 while the shed does not, also we picked up matching coues shed and my buddy actually saw the same coues while hiking and took pictures of him from 30 yards. During the weekend we glassed up 6 different herds of elk with each having it's own bull, glassed up plenty of turkey, one dandy mule buck and a bobcat. One of the smaller bulls we saw, 6 pt but on his right side he busted his bone off right by the g-3 Here's my buddy with the big 5 pt shed, the 5th point is towards the end, probably 1 inch long Shed from the weekend Then yesterday I decided to give it a try in 7E for my cow tag, got to my area in the afternoon after classes and glassed up elk right away. Sadly they were in rough terrian whereas I couldn't hike in quietly with a bum leg, so I sat back and watched them the whole time. This bull was bugling pretty well..getting all rowdy, i'd give him a 300 flat, after watching this herd I headed back to the truck and stopped in a thicket of Fir and decided to cow call for some randy lil raghorn, sure enough 20 minutes later a 5x5 came along to 50 yards He's bulging in this picture The cow I wanted but I can't really shoot 700 yards with a bow I got to see a whole bunch of game...more than I've ever seen before, I am picking out parts of animals, ears, legs, head, noses way before I actually find the whole animal, all I gotta say is I love my Swarovskis!!!! I really miss the archery season this year, i had a blast last year...lesson learned...don't ride a bike off a ramp again
jgabler Report post Posted October 3, 2006 Those are some great pics. A couple of my friends have gotten a couple of bulls this year there. One 330 and one 350. There is a lot of big everything in 27. I love that unit a lot.

More D Report post Posted October 4, 2006 Boy you got me fired up! I can't wait for my scouting trip, two more weeks! Great pics. Maybe you saw more game because you were not moving around so much.?.?.
drgonzales Report post Posted October 4, 2006 Lot of elk in 27 but I think the GF overkilled the cows. My brother has been hunting up there with a buddy of his for a week or so and says there are plenty of hot big bulls without cows. I think we could take it easy on the cows in this unit. Same as last year. I had Unit 27 archery bull last year and some of the satellite bulls I saw were 330-340" bulls. Not enough cows. Dang cow hunters.
elkhunter Report post Posted October 4, 2006 I saw more game cuz i invested my money in quality optics As for unit 27 elk, I agree...saw plenty of bulls and most elk herds consisted of 4 to 6 cows, nothing more than that. Most units we should see atleast 10 cows per herd or so. I believe they're trying to make 27 a trophy bull unit because they keep dropping the # of archery tags each year for bull
