4Falls Report post Posted July 24, 2013 I have a vintage Remington 721 .30-'06. The idea occurred to me today that the action may be a good start for a custom build. Where would an average guy start? Though I'd like to switch to a different caliber I'm no sure which would be the best choice I don't think I'd want anything to crazy, just different. What are your guys thoughts? Thanks. firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted July 24, 2013 Keep the stock, keep the action, just re-barrel it. I have one in 270 and i LOVE the rifle... Had it out and ran a patch through it today.
4Falls Report post Posted July 24, 2013 I was kinda thinking the same thing. Maybe change the barrel and the trigger although a new stock would be nice too. Maybe a wood one with a little more interest to it. I was actually thinking about rebarreling it to a .270 or a 270 wsm.
firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted July 24, 2013 You can tune the trigger no problem, mine was just like a rem 700 trigger and breaks clean.
ultramag Report post Posted July 25, 2013 You could chamber it for 6.5x284 with just a barrel swap..the wsm chambering will require the bolt face to be opened up..
Flatlander Report post Posted July 25, 2013 Casey - Who re-barreled yours? My first rifle is a 721 in .270 that my Grandfather handed down to me. He passed away last year and I have been thinking I need to do something with it to memorialize him this season.
kwp Report post Posted July 25, 2013 I have an old model 721 in 30-06 as well. Is the bulge in the barrel just past the recoil lug a standard on those models?

I would think polishing up your grandpas rifle and taking a deer or elk with it 'as-is' would be a great tribute. I have heen thinking of doing the same with my grandpas 721 in 30-06. It is 60 years old and still shoots sub-moa with factory loads and a 4x weaver. Lol. Goes to show you dont "need" all the fancy fixins to shoot great woth a great rifle. yotebuster Report post Posted July 25, 2013 I've got one in a 300 H&H. It has an old Lyman 2.5x on it. Shoots sweet. Gonna shoot a deer with it this year just to say I did it.
firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted July 25, 2013 Nobody re-barreled my rifle, it is all original as it came from the factory with a 3-9 Simmons on it.
4Falls Report post Posted July 25, 2013 I really appreciate all the input. After reading what every one has said I think I'm going to just keep it original as possible. Tough to beat the ol' ought 6 and I think shes got a few deer left in her still. Ill just replace the old Walmart Tasco scope my dad had stuck on there after he couldnt see the super fine crosshairs of the original K-4 anymore. Ill bring it into the local gunsmith here in town and have him check the barrel and clean it up real good. Its been sitting quite a while. Who knows it may become my go to gun when everything is all said and done. Thanks again guys.

Got your post crossed up with the one above. maybe I will shoot my carp deer with it this year. I shot my first two elk with it when I was a kid, which was cool cause grandpa bought it right after the war for elk hunting. He never shot an elk with it so I was happy to fulfill its purpose. Maybe shooting another mule deer like all the ones he killed in ID would be fitting. 4Falls - Thanks for posting this, it got my mind thinking.

roninflag Report post Posted August 15, 2013 You can tune the trigger no problem, mine was just like a rem 700 trigger and breaks clean. If your trigger is ok already leave. adjust it if it needs it. just clean the barrel real good with jb/usb and kriol. put a decent scope on it and shoot it.
