I AM PISSED OFF!

Recommended Posts

I picked my bino's up off the seat of my rhino and took them into the camp trailor and rinsed them off in the sink like i always do. I was wiping the lenses dry when I noticed both objective lenses were cracked! One side has 2 cracks! I'm guessing the bino's got hot sitting on the seat in the sun and the cold water caused them to crack but this is E.D. glass. They are Minox 15's made with the same glass used in swaro's. Anybody ever hear of this?

WOW, that's surprising. How hot could they have been?

Anyway, here is the email for customer service for minox. I had to send mine in over the summer to have the eyecups replaced.

Maybe they could give you a loaner pair until your are fixed?

I find it hard to believe that the truck got hot enough to allow the cool water to break them.

I can believe it. One of the worst things you can do to binos is leave them in intense sunlight because heat will expand the gases inside and cause seals to expand. If the lenses were hot enough and placed in cool enough water they certainly will crack. What the heat or cold temps would have to be, I don't know. High quality glass or not would probably crack. Good news is you have a good warranty with Minox (and I think your glass was made by Leica) so you should be alright. More guys mess up good glass leaving them on the dash with the sun shining through the windshield. Good luck and get them in for repair asap.

That's a bummer <_< But if they were baking in the sun all day I wonder if the gasses inside blew them out...

That seems like a more likely senerio than the change in temp due to the water. Aren't most of these optics filled with some kind of gas to keep them from fogging up on the inside?

I agree that the water broke them. I use to teach a glass art class and whenever we did slumping, glass had to heat up real slow and cool real slow. The glass would crack if it didn't.

Sorry to hear about your glasses. I also agree that the quick change in temperature broke the glass. Optical glass can be very fragile with respect to temp changes. I have seen some optics break due to the heat from just holding them in your hand, of coarse no binoculars use that type of glass. Try to avoid extreme temps, but if the binos do get hot or cold, try to stabilize them slowly.

You should have no problems getting it repaired by Minox. You do not say from where or when you purchased them, however, if you would me to assist you with taking care of it, it would be my pleasure. Please feel free to contact me directly.
