Where to shoot near Sierra Vista?

New to the area and looking for a place to shoot that's off the beaten path. I am able to shoot on the base but prefer to get away from other people. Family is out of town and I'm getting bored, wanting to put some rounds and arrows down range. Thanks for any information

You might call the USFS and ask them.

 

I know a lot of guys shoot in areas up the road into Hunter Canyon. However, I also know that the USFS has been closing access to those areas because they are worried about all the shooting in there. It can be pretty much non-stop shooting in that area during the day and people were complaining.

The Sierra vista shooting range is your safest bet. They've shut down shooting in the popular canyons under the guise of fire prevention. Better contact USFS and check before you go.

Nobody is going to care about arrows though... So you can pretty much shoot your bow anywhere. The Huachuca Mountain Archers and Bowhunters Club has the nicest range and even a walk through course. Membership is cheap and they have monthly 3D shoots that offer awesome targets on real terrain.

Head to las cinega conservation area in 34b, it's a mostly BLM land and all public land from sonoita to I 10, prob 30 minute drive from Sierra vista, plenty of open grounds to shoot out there

Another place would be Dry Canyon, like your going to Tucson proceeding through the BP Checkpoint, continue driving north around 1.5 to 2 miles and make a left towards the Whetstone Mountains. This left turn will be the only turn around spot within that distance, so you can’t miss it! There is a parking area as soon as you go from pavement to dirt. You should be able to find a good spot out there.

Last time I went out that way Dry Canyon had a big NO SHOOTING sign... Same as Hunter Canyon. I'm 90% sure you have to get past the cattle guard on the dirt road for Dry Canyon which when you get past the fence is National Forest/BLM land.... Otherwise you are on State Land where target shooting is prohibited. Also, watch for cattle out there (make sure you have an adequate backstop). Watched some people doing some shooting out there across a wash and all of a sudden a whole bunch of cattle popped up past their target- scared the wits out of them and they left! Like I said before... I suggest the Sierra Vista shooting range for overall safety and legality. Plus, the fees go to maintain the range which is NRA approved and maintained.
