joeinaz0 Report post Posted July 18, 2013 Drew an October 24B coues tag. By no means do I consider myself a trophy hunter, just want to see some bucks and have an opportunity. Taking my 10 year old son along for his first big game experience. Any suggestions on where to start my scouting? Have never hunted this unit before and am looking for some high vantage points to start my glassing.
Jcubed Report post Posted July 18, 2013 Congrats on the tag and good luck! That unit holds deer all over but some of that country gets rough and roadless pretty quick! I have some really good sheds from that unit and hope you enjoy your hunt. The AZG&FD website has some good information as to starting points so check it out! http://www.azgfd.gov/h_f/hunting_units_24b.shtml
joeinaz0 Report post Posted July 26, 2013 Thanks Jcubed. I am thinking about coming in from the north end below Roosevelt lake. Less roads hopefully means less people. I love to hike so putting a pack on and covering some ground doesn't bother me one bit. After looking over many maps of the unit, there are many hiking trails covering the mountain ranges in the unit. The wilderness area appeals to me because of the lack of roads. Really want to get away from as many hunters as I can.
Flatlander Report post Posted July 26, 2013 Thanks Jcubed. I am thinking about coming in from the north end below Roosevelt lake. Less roads hopefully means less people. Really want to get away from as many hunters as I can. Be ware that the more well known trails in the wilderness do attract some attention. Horse guys usually pack into reavis ranch and camp. I have had success using the trails to get into the country and then going cross country somewhere on the interior.
joeinaz0 Report post Posted July 27, 2013 Thank you Flatlander for the info. Gonna head out this weekend and get familiar with the area and some of the trails. I've got six weeks of vacation to burn up before the end of the year so I will be able to make many trips out there before my hunt starts.
tjhunt2 Report post Posted July 27, 2013 Whitetail or muley? 24B is an awesome unit and has been one of my favorites for years. I don't hunt it as much as I'd like but I have a ton of memories. It's a huge unit and I wish you success. TJ
tjhunt2 Report post Posted July 27, 2013 I would also pass along that it might not be a good ideal to drag your 10 year old along on a trail off the beaten path. There are many roads that you can travel that he, you, and him can travel with a lot of glassing country. Make it fun for him. TJ
