Grancel Fitz photo

Recommended Posts

Grancel Fitz was one of the founding members of the current Boone and Crockett measuring system.

As a book collector of old hunting books, I acquired a book of his. Inside was a transparency showing

his measuring a polar bear skull in 1956. This is a scan of that slide that was sent to B&C by myself

for their Grancel Fitz library. I added the information to make the photo more informative. This was

truly a rare find. Mr. Fitz was a famous commercial photographer in New York City and most always

had his medium format camera with him. I hope you enjoy this rare photo of a pioneer in North American

big game hunting.

Reminds me of the old school Santa Claus I grew up with who always had a pipe clenched between his teeth! Those images are difficult to find in modern Christmas books.

kidso,

In all his books and the photos I've seen of him, he was never without his pipe. I understand about the pipe smoking Santa Claus. I remember him also from my youth. Ah modern times.

I had some young folks in my den the other day, who could'nt understand why I had so many books, much less take time to read them. We had a quick lesson in imagination and the

adventures contained in books. I think they all left staring at their smart-phones, not convinced books were all that great.
