biglakejake Report post Posted June 19, 2013 enjoyed many a toast in that great old building. Marble Canyon Lodge burns to the ground The Marble Canyon Lodge and Restaurant burned to the ground early this morning. The historic building has been a stop for travelers in the Lee's Ferry area since 1926. Highway 89A was closed for several hours in the area. According to information from the Coconino County Sheriff's Office, the owner, who lives on site, awoke to a burglary alarm at about 1:30 a.m. and found smoke and flames billowing out of the rear of the building. Construction workers, who were staying at the motel as they worked to improve Lees Ferry Road, scrambled to help. The workers used their two water tanker trucks. Firefighters from Page arrived about an hour and a half later. Emergency responders from the Fredonia Fire Department, Colorado City/Hildale Fire Department, Page Electric, National Park Service Rangers from Lee's Ferry, and Kane County Medical Transport were also on site. The newer building that houses the post office and convenience store north of the lodge was not damaged. The motel to the south was also unharmed. The sheriff's office and the Flagstaff Police Department are investigating how the fire might have started.
Pine Donkey Report post Posted June 19, 2013 Very sad to see another great lodge burn down. We have lost so many of these iconic buildings over the years.

billrquimby Report post Posted June 20, 2013 I stayed there several times, but the most memorable of those visits was with two friends from South Africa. We were traveling from Tucson to hunt antelope near Lander, Wyoming, and spent a day fishing Lee's Ferry and another day on Lake Powell to break up the trip. My friends still talk about that trip. tjhunt2 Report post Posted June 20, 2013 I ate many of meals in that lodge. It is sad to know it's gone. Lots of memories in there that won't ever be forgotten after a hard day on the river. TJ

Outdoor Writer Report post Posted June 20, 2013 I wonder if Greg Foster's mom still owned MC Lodge? Greg is/was a river guide that I fished with often in the 1990s. Many years ago I gave his mom a 16"X20" print of a photo of mine that had a silhouetted elk against an orange sunset. It had been hanging in the motel office area where guests check-in. If it was still there, I guess it's likely only ashes now. Greg
couesmagnet Report post Posted June 20, 2013 Sounds like who ever owned the place was ready to retire and got careless with a match late that night. Kind of like the old antlers bar in young over again. Sad to see marble burnt though, i have several memories there also.
