CWpredator Report post Posted June 16, 2013 I recently started building a AR15 platform rifle since the 338 lapua is done. I just finished the Seekins lower with national match Geiselle trigger and colt lower parts kit. Would the 6x45 beat the .223 be worth the jump considering I'm just looking for something for 400 yards or less.... you know to make them prairie dogs pop. I'm looking for a Varmint platform with a 20" barrel. anyone have an opinion on what parts to go with right now considering lead times for uppers is pushing a year with all the madness... Anyone have any other suggestions because I'm looking at going with a vltor upper krieger barrel DTI gas block les Baer chromed bolt carrier group, but looking at what I want is going to be a year before I recieve everything. Anyone have any other suggestions on uppers that I could pick up now with great accuracy without the wait time? Any suggestions help on what I can get quick will help. Building a custom will be something ill work up in the mean time
STOMP442 Report post Posted June 16, 2013 The 6x45 is a fine cartridge but only if you are going to shoot bullets heavier than 70 grains to truely get the most out of the 6mm platform. I say that because a .223 will shoot up to a 70 grain bullet just fine and it having a smaller diameter and longer length will have a higher B.C than any of the 6mms of the same weight. Higher B.C. translates into less windage and more retained energy at longer ranges. If you just want something different I say go for it nothing wrong with that but as far as performance goes your really not going to gain much if anything over the 223 if you are going to be using the light bullets. That being said the cartrige I would choose for a custom AR build would be the 6.5 grendel. Excellent bullet selections and a definite improvement over the .223 platform and absolutely deadly on coues out to 500 yards with the 123 Amax.
Big or Bust Report post Posted June 16, 2013 The 6x45 in a AR platform and a 2.26" or so max OAL will allow you to shoot heavier bullets in 6mm vs. .224" with the constrained OAL. The only 70 grain buller you can reasonably run at 2.26" withour sacrificing significant poweder capacity is the 70 Sierra SMP which has the BC of a mattress. Running something like the 53 grain .224" Amax will get you to 400 easily in the vanilla .223 with a 2.26" OAL. You will also get there with a 75 Vmax in 6x45 at 2,900... I'd check out the 6 or 6.5 DTI that Mike at DTech has to offer dependent on what direction you want to go. good luck -
cactusjack Report post Posted July 8, 2013 I shot my 6x45 for the first time last week. It was awesome. I didn't have time to load any of my own ammo, so I bit the bullet and ordered some from Les Baer. The 62 gr Varmint Grenades did a number on ground squirrels. (on a buddys ranch in Colorado) No pictures were taken unfortunately. Suppressed with my Titanium 762 can it was awesome. Will work up my own loads from here. I wanted a 6mm without carrying my LR308/243 combo. A little loss of speed, but I love it.
