Quail Covey forecast for 2013?

Recommended Posts

While drinking my first cup of coffee this morning I had four different quail coveys come into my backyard pond.

Each covey had young chicks, oldest were nearly full grown and youngest were size of golfballs. Highest number of chicks was 24 with a set of parents and the smallest group was 3.

Even with this drought it could be a good year for quail! We'll have to see how many chicks actually survive though.

That's refreshing to hear I was beginning to wonder if anyone besides myself have been seeing chicks.

I've spent some time in my jeep the last few weekends. I've seen a couple good coveys out there. Just hope they stay healthy through the summer.

While out pig hunting many days this year we saw a ton of quail. I think this may be the year to drop one of the 4 pounders my neighbor has been feeding.

I've seen large coveys in residential areas, but outside of town the coveys have looked pretty poor to me...

Another poor year is my prediction. There is decent cover from last year's monsoon, but winter/spring rains were slim.

What you see in town vs what is out where you can hunt are typically very different.

I think it will be better than last year but still far from spectacular. We need several consecutive years with good winder rains to bring the numbers back up.
