AZ RANGER Report post Posted September 21, 2006 does any body use only spotting scopes for glassing. I already have some 20x 60 pentax binos that I use but I been thinking of buying a nikon spotter to reach out a little further. with my current set up I have a hard time findin deer at distance unless they are up feeding I want a spotter to better see in the shadows and such. I have never glassed with a scope and wondered if most people just use them to take a closer look at game they have found or if you are using them for hrs at a time like binos. is the eye strain too much. the nikon scopes are in my price range and I looked through one yesterday and was very impressed. it would be in the 15-45x65 range
missedagain Report post Posted September 21, 2006 In my opinion it is not worth carrying both large bino's and a scope. I have the same 20x60's you do and think that they are great for the money. I feel that I find more deer with these than when I used to carry a scope. The best advise I know for finding deer that aren't out and moving is to set your field of view on an area and don't move or touch the glass at all. Even if my leg is just barely touching my tripod I get a shaking field of view. With your glasses completely still scan your field of view completely and slowly and then move the glass and repeat. This is what it looks like from the deers point of view.
SunDevil Report post Posted September 22, 2006 I use my spotter to look at deer I have already found or if there is something I think might be part of a deer to get a better look. One thing that helps when looking though a scope is to keep both eyes open and cover the eye over with your hand that is not looking through the scope. This helps out on the eye strain. If your considering a nikon spotter go with the 82mm. The 75X really comes in handy some times. CB
shortpants Report post Posted September 22, 2006 Glass with glasses, spot with a spotter. In order to glass effectively you must be comfortable from your seat to your eyes. the longer you can sit still with your eyes burried in the glass the more deer you'll find. You'll probably find more deer if you buy a pair of 10x binos for early morning and late evening. Then bust out your 20's for finding bedded deer.
