I have made several trips down through Salt River canyon recently and passed many trucks headed north hauling copper.

Today, I was leaving Springerville headed to Show Low and passed two trucks headed towards Springerville hauling copper.

Where is the copper coming from and where is it going??

Just caught me off guard today passing those trucks headed to Springerville.

50+ trucks a day since 2004 pass eastbound on 60 through show low. headed for minnesota and michigan wire plants.

i have lunch in front of arby's from time to time and have counted 8 trucks in 30 minutes rolling up from globe.

some hit i40 at holbrook or sanders and others take 60 to socorro and jump on i25 northbound

The trucks going through Springerville were probably coming from Morenci, Freeport Macmoran has a mine there. Not a market type guy but from what I understand most of the Copper is being bought up by China and India.

Yep, those guys had quite a little racket going..... ;)

Regarding China/India, they have definitely been buying a lot more in recent years, but not necessarily 'most'.

The copper is coming from where I work at Asarco in Hayden Az. A copper smelter those things you see on a truck are called anodes and there is 3 bundles to each truck. One bundle has around 18 bars which weigh around 880lbs a lot of money on those trucks! We send out plenty of trucks! If you ever see a number 416 on them I made that copper ;)

The copper theft ring also took place here where employees stole more than 10 million dollars worth of copper!

The reason you see truck instead of rail is because they go to Amarillo Texas to another refinery to make it to 100% copper it's only 99.9% on trucks. We also send some on rail too.

A theft ring operating in plain sight? Sounds like the Social Security and the IRS. Crazy story.

Yep, loading-up trucks of copper and hauling them away from ASARCO for sale. To the tune of $10MM!

I went to high school in Kearny with a guy named Joe Arbizu. Not sure if it's the same one....
