hunter01 Report post Posted May 29, 2013 After a few days of extensive glassing, seeing a lot of bucks and no Javelina, my daughter Hunter was ready to put the smack down on something. The third day of the hunt, before we decided to head back to the truck, we decided to do some afternoon varmint calling. Within five minutes we had a double set of coyotes heading in at 350 yards to an old circe wood call. They were working their way to a saddle across the draw from us, ranged at 190 yards. I told Hunter to set up for the saddle and hold on the area. She chose not to use the shooting sticks and set up, seated, elbow on her knee. A couple minutes passed and one of the dogs poked his body through the cactus and stopped in the saddle to try and locate the source of the dying jack rabbit sounds. BLAM! Before I could direct her to the dog, she put down her 1st coyote and blew a little wax out of my ear as I was planning to give her a landmark when she shot. DOG DOWN! On the 4th day, we saw two nice bucks in the mid-90's and glassed up a lone pig two miles away in a grass filled canyon. We made our way to the Javi we saw earlier. As we topped a small hill below the landmark where we saw the Javi, we found a heard of 9 working their way out of a draw at 177 yards, rooting and feeding. She wanted to make a one-shot kill, saying she was only going to need one round, like she did for the coyote. She set up, resting her rifle on my tripod. We looked for an older class javi with a larger head and calloused front knees. We selected one and I put in my ear plugs. She took her time on the trigger and put down her 1st Javelina at 11 years old. A great follow up to shooting an excellent coues buck last year, (page 25 Jr hunt regs, lower right). A proud dad had to share the story............

Coach Report post Posted May 31, 2013 Awesome!!! I love seeing those youth hunters out there getting it done, and clearly Hunter (perfect name for her, BTW) has a great mentor. Great shooting, Hunter, and congrats on the Javi, the coyote and the deer. And great job, Dad for getting her out there and teaching her how to do it so well. hunter01 Report post Posted July 23, 2013 And the story gets better.......After checking the the on-line draw results.....I had to make a double take on Hunter's results. Bighorn Sheep= Not Drawn Jr. Deer/36B= Sucessful, Great!! Buffalo/Cow/Raymond Ranch= Sucessful, HOLY MAN!!!! And with only 4 points! And then come to find that my wife drew a Dec. Whitetail tag. And I got skunked! But I guess getting skunked some times ain't so bad....

I will be assisting my buddy, Mark Hullinger, on his buffalo hunt in Nov. When does Hunter's buffalo hunt come in? It would be neat if we were there at the same time. hunter01 Report post Posted July 29, 2013 Thanks TJ, She drew the December 6.7.8 hunt. I considered the weather, wanting it to be cold as possible. I'll have to buy less ice I hope, and we don't get a freak heat wave or overly mild winter. Andy
