rclouse79 Report post Posted May 28, 2013 I was able to get away for three days to do some fishing at Apache Lake. I decided to drive across the lake and camp in a nice little cove I found on my last trip. It seems like a body of standing water brings the riff raff out of the wood work, and they are usually loud, drunk and on their worst behavior by the time the sun goes down. I have had enough negative experiences at group campsites to avoid them whenever I can. I guess my plan for a nice quiet peaceful night backfired because I was just about to go to sleep and I start to hear woofing. I turned on my headlamp and saw five javalina not 15 feet from my cot. They froze for a while, and then ran off. I don’t think they were very happy with me for blocking their trail to water, and they voiced their displeasure for the next half an hour or so before wandering off. I have to say it was much more exciting and enjoyable listening to them than drunkards, loud music, and dogs attacking other dogs and people. This was by far my best fishing trip I have had in Arizona. I caught my personal best largemouth at 21 inches, by personal best catfish at 29 inches, and my best smallmouth. I also caught more fish than usual. I would like to think I am starting to figure these desert fish out, but it is probably more luck than anything. I caught fish on a bunch of different lures, but my best bass came on a senko. It is crazy how finicky the bass are. I would find one lure and presentation that would be on fire for a couple of hours, and I thought I had discovered the holy grail of bass fishing. I would come out the next day, throw the same thing the same way, and haul nothing but water. I was packing up my camp on the third day, and there was a rattle snake right between my camp and my boat. I must have walked right past him three or four times. The last time I would have stepped on him if he hadn’t started making noise. Thank goodness those things have rattles on them! Even though my buddy's were not able to make it, this trip will be hard to beat.
