I got bit by the bug

Recommended Posts

Well I went to Cabelas with a friend of mine on the 16th just to look around and get him setup for his first big game tag (an 18b mule deer hunt). Well I went to the archery section and started to look around and tried out one of the lower end models and really liked it. So I went home to do some research and to think about it a little bit. Well I went back the next day and purchased my first bow and I stepped up a few steps from the low end one I was looking at before and went with a Diamond Rapture Bow Kit by Bowtech. I have had it for a day and a half and have already shot it close to 200 times.

Here is a picture of my new setup.

Here I am shooting my new bow

Also does anybody on here shoot at Papago Park because I will be going out there every day for the next few months :D

Nice bow, younghunter. Welcome to the club of archery addicts! Bowhunting is not just a sport it is a addiction, I've been doing it for almost 6 years now and still can't get enough of it!! B)

Younghunter,

Nice set-up. Your now in the land of no return! You'll always have a tag to hunt, archery deer, over the counter turkey tags in the Fall- Archery elk and the opportunity to hunt elk (at least cows) if you choose much more frequently than a rifle hunter could ever dream (well in most cases) :D

Make sure you try Usery Mountain out in East Mesa- They have a 28 targets that are strategically placed in the desert and you have choices from which distance to shoot ranging from a 10yrd shot to 70 yard shot. Somewhat realistic hunting yardages and desert terrain to match. Shooting at hay bayles is nice, but you'll really like the Archery course @ Usery.

They also have your basic yardage targets from 10 - 90 yards as well to site in your pins.

Good Luck !

Congrats on your new found love.

You appear to be canting. Maybe it is just the angle of the picture. Do you have a bubble on your sight? The only reason I ask about this is the last friend I shot with was canting and I never mentioned it to him. Then someone else did and he asked me if I knew he was canting and I said yes. He got kinda pissed at me for not telling him.

I have shot with many people that cant and I never thought anything about it. You can compensate with your pins to correct it but I think the best thing is to get use to using a bubble level and be vertical.

It is good to see a new archer excited about the sport.

Dave I do have a bubble on it but I wasn't even looking at it til my last few sets yesterday and I was way left on it. But I have corrected it and I am doing much better now. Thanks for looking out for me man.

I have to tell you there is no program to cure this particular affliction. Especially at your age. Might as well start selling your firarms now, as that is the next step in the process. Give it a couple of years and whatever guns you own will be rusted to the point of losing value. Better to sell them now and get it over with.. LOL>.. Good luck.

YoungHunter,

Glad to see another archer you will love it! Like Doug said Usery has a great range there are not many out there like it. I know you did not post your picture so we could critique you but your release hand seems to be floating back to far behind your head. If you can put the string on the tip of your nose and your knuckle of your index finger should be in the whole behind your jaw under your ear. I will post a picture that should help. You may need to change the draw length to get this if it to long.Again just trying to help. Draw length is one of the most important things to shooting accuracy with archery. A 1/2in can make a huge difference. And to long a draw is worse than to short IMO.Again welcome to archery you will love it!!

O'ya the yellow line shows your nock should be in line with your eye. I stold this pic from anouther web site.

Young hunter for a begginer your form looks pretty good to me. Nice loose grip. Good relaxed stance. I bet you are shooting pretty good all ready. From your hand position I think your draw length is ok as long as you are not locking your elbow, although Bow Nut may be right because I can't wear a ballcap and shoot. Something you might want to experiment with is your left arm elbow position. Where your elbow in now pointing at 7 o clock. I am not saying this is wrong, but you might get better shooting results if you could try roatating the elbow up until it is pointing at around 10 o clock. This will be uncomfortable to hold at first, but for some people they can hold their bow steadier and shoot better. Also it will move your forearm out of the way and you can lose the protector pad.

I have that same case. But mine is on it's last leg this year. It's missing two of the four latches and it's tweaked so bad it no longer seals tight. But it lasted for over four years of hard use.
