Southern left over tag questions

Recommended Posts

I'm really sorry if I'm beating a dead horse but I am clueless when it comes to the southern units. And I don't expect any "secret spots" I really just need some pointers from the experts! I really wanted to branch out and try a new area. An info would be really really appreciated! People have just made me nervous about the illegals! I was looking at 36b and 36c. Please feel free to pm me! Or even text if you want.

The herds in the 36s are getting thinned out from my experience. 36c is said to have an extremely high lion population, but I have no time spent there.

36a has a whole 9 hunts counting 2 Jrs and 2 mule deer hunts. Not to mention BP heavy presence in chase of illegals. Only saw one of the mojado herd on my hunt last year. Saw two bucks out of about 40 deer. 40 deer mind you was once a day not 4 days that it was last year. Sadly I hunted harder last year than normal too.

I haven't been in B for a few years, but I figure with access opened up a little more and more folks on left over tags the herd will be thinned out over there too. Seems like that was the report from most after last years hunt.

Most of us that have hunted the 36s over the last 20 years can vouch that the herds are not what they were and are getting worse. I have hunted 36a all but about 3 years for the last 18, and this year I reached the conclusion that id rather not have a tag then hunt there.

As far as the illegals, any of the southern units will have that possibility. I know one or two people who said never again after meeting armed crews in 36c. The illegals are not a problem, its the drug runners and guards that you have to worry about.

MRL is correct about 36c and the lions. He is also correct that it isn't the illegals but the drug runners and their guards that are the danger esp in 36c.

Personally I love unit 36c because it is beautiful and every time I climb a peak I can look out over the flats and mountain ranges and wonder what it was like in the 1800s.

Having said that when I go into the unit I leave detailed directions as to where I will be at and when I will be back. I always ask the BP what the activity it like but I never get a straight answer.

I am with you on the beauty down there, it has a home feeling for me. You know where the good photo ops are when you spend most of your life somewhere. I grew up in 36a, 36b, 34a and 34b.

Been hunting 3 or 4 units down there since 1977 same places now as back then I can usally find many bucks but 2 years ago with my son and grandson

the drug runners came in my camp to do there drug deal at 3:am I chased them for 10 minutes up the mountain with my 357 and spot light before they got to there trucks and hauled butt 2 were carring ak's

I won't put my family thru that for a deer just not worth It.

Lived, worked and hunted in the border units my whole life and I have never once had a problem (illegals that is, I have had a mountain lion problem though). If you want to branch out I would say try 35a, it's a southern unit with decent deer population so it should be easier to find deer without knowing the area too well. Lots of hunters pound the unit but its still a decent hunt and a good place to start if you want to come south. IMO anyways.
