My Future Hunting Buddy!

Recommended Posts

Last night, my 5-year old son asked if we could go out in the back yard and shoot our bows. Considering I had just received a cortisone shot in my shoulder to get me through until surgery this summer, it was hard for me to tell him no. He politely told me that he would shoot first and then I could go. A year ago, when he inherited his older sister's Nuclear Ice, I had to stand close as he drew it back and then help him hold it there so he could shoot, but he was pulling 13.5 lbs at 4 years old then. When he shot it, he hit all over the target, including frequent misses. Last night, he drew it back and held his anchor perfectly and is in the initial stages of grouping his arrows! Granted, he's only shooting at 5 yards, but considering how young he is, I just want his confidence boosted and his form to come together. He shot two or three groups, but he never got tired and never missed the target. I need to take him in to Bull Basin up here and have his draw length adjusted a bit, but his form looks great to me! He was so excited and he informed me that he was going archery hunting with me next fall! Unfortunately, I had to tell him that he was too young still and that, because of my upcoming surgery, my early archery season hunt was out, but I reminded him of my promise to let him sit in the blind with me and his sister in south Texas this November. I also told him that if he kept at it, we'd probably have to get him a newer, big bow like his sister's by next summer!

Very Cool, not only will you have another hunting partner, but some help getting your critters back to camp in your "old age"...

No kidding! I keep telling my 9 year old daughter that when she gets her first elk down, it won't get itself out of the woods and I may be too crippled to do the work. By the time my son is ready, that may not be much of a joke!

I started my daughter with a Fred Bear fiberglass longbow (painted purple for her) when she was 4. She's now 9, shooting a Hoyt Ruckus and pulling 27.5 lbs and drilling the bullseye at 20 yards. I started my son with that same purple longbow when he was 2.5 years old and he's never looked back. Feel free to show your wife!

That is awesome! My "future hunting buddy" turns 10 next fall. I can hardly wait!

I don't know how I missed that picture the first time, but that is AWESOME!
