TATAat27 Report post Posted September 17, 2006 What do you guys use to fight off theses pesky critters? I've been out scouting and the Deep Woods Off for sportsmen spray just ain't cuttin' it . I would just like to know what your experiences with different pest sprays are. Thx, Rich.

AZP&Y Report post Posted September 17, 2006 I use the OR spring ringhead net. It keeps the mesh away from your face and still allows you to look through binos or the spotting scope (it just takes a bit of getting used too). After my 11 trips to Alaska, mine still has mashed skeeters that were ready to cart me away. You have to know your tolerance of insects and swarming skeeters in Alaska (the state bird) have NO MERCY! Good Luck I posted a pic so you know what it looks like. For $13.95 it's a great piece of gear when you need it. Gnats can be even worse because of the cluster and when you start in haling them and choking, it's not fun anymore .. You can opt for Ben's 100 DEET, (puchased at campmor.com) but that's like some serious toxic stuff (although they say it's safe).. but I guarantee they'll move from you if you wear that stuff. BASS Report post Posted September 18, 2006 I just wear long sleeves, and a full face mask (no eye cutouts) along with some kind of gloves. It won't stop you from twitching when they fly close to your ear but it will keep them off of you! I don't wear any bug spray because it makes me feel gritty and dirty. Then once I sweat a little I'm sticky.
Redman Report post Posted September 18, 2006 100% deet no problems. Spray it on your shirt, face, and ears and there will be no bugs at all. Redman
the breeze Report post Posted September 18, 2006 Even with the repellent the gnats are still going to be flying in your eyes, nose, and ears. Here is what I do for a long sit on a hot day. Get some swimming goggles some ear plugs and a nose plug (that the swimmers wear also) and good luck!

Rembrant Report post Posted September 19, 2006 Eat raw garlic. No kidding. A whole lotta years ago at Lake Alamo, I was talkin to an old man who was cookin himself a steak, and slicing a ton of garlic and onions all over it. The skeeters were tearin me up, but not a one was lighting on the old man. I brought this to his attention and he told me that garlic keeps away the women, vampires, and insects. I have found this to be true. Ever since I started eating raw garlic with meals, I aint seent one vampire! And I had really been needing a woman repellant, as good looking as I am. But even more scary than vamps and ladies are them dang bugs! Garlic is great stuff. It thins your blood, dialates your arteries, fights off cancer, kills athletes foot, prevents and kills bacterial infections, and creates a hostile invironment for viruses. Sure does stink though. When people tell me they're startin to get sick, I tell them to eat raw garlic. It'll either ward off the cold or lessen the severity of it. Most people would rather be sick. Personally, I would rather stink than be sick. Raw garlic goes really, REALLY good with greasy food, like pizza, or hamburgers, or Jack-in-the-Box tacos. Just eat it like you would that little chile they give you with your pizza. It's just the same only different, in fact, better. Once you start eating raw garlic with your greasy food, you'll miss it really bad when you don't have some. Again, I'm not kiddin: Permeate your blood with garlic, and there is no bug on earth that'll want to hang with you. And as a hunter, it'll bring playing the wind to a whole new level - where it should be in the first place. Mike

Thought they were nuts when I first heard this back in Maine/NB. Tried it, and - VOILA
