jgabler Report post Posted September 15, 2006 I found two sets of sheds from the same deer. One set is from 2 years ago, about an 80" buck then, and this years sheds, probably pushing 105-110" buck. I also found single sheds from other deer in the area. Does anyone have suggestions on how to hunt this bad boy. He is in primarily pine trees with a mixture of oak and juniper. hunt4horns Report post Posted September 15, 2006 Invest into a cheap gamecam and let it help do some monitoring for you. See if maybe he is still in the area and go from there. Lots of glassing and a lot of homework usually helps. It may not be easy but well worth it. Spending lots of time in the hills is your best bet.
GRONG Report post Posted September 18, 2006 Salt then trail camera in a couple of months. If you don't want to wait then I'd suggest just sitting in the forest where you found the sheds and wait him out.... HA HA HA!! Seriously, I'd salt him.
jgabler Report post Posted October 3, 2006 Thanks for answering me back. I am going to have to get a trail camera and I didn't know you could put salt out. Sorry it took so long to answer, I've been away for a while. Someone shot at him while I was closing the distance last year on my rifle hunt. I think they saw me getting closer and took a pop shot at him to hopefully get him or scare him off from me so that I wouldn't.
elkhunter Report post Posted October 3, 2006 My buddy that picked up the matching coues shed this past weekend saw the exact same buck in the EXACT same spot while he was hiking to a glassing point, the buck was 30 yards out!! he took pictures of him and we confirmed that it was his shed that we picked up, if you're lucky that buck you're chasing has his very own wonderful spot and will never leave....salt his a$$ and trail cam him to confirm if he's using the salt and stick him with an arrow! TAM Report post Posted October 4, 2006 From my experience when a coues deer gets big his home territory gets rather small. During the rut he may roam a little more looking for does, but the rest of the year he's probably not moving very far.
GRONG Report post Posted October 5, 2006 Just find a good spot that you think the deer frequents and most the general public doesn't. I mix about a half bag of rock salt into a churned up pile of dirt. Then I pour a gallon or two of water on it, preferably water thats been filtered about 20 times (you want your buck to only get the best you know) and mix it all up. Hopefully w/in a month or so they'll find it and start using it. Good luck and let us know your progress.
TAM Report post Posted October 5, 2006 Josh, so which brand of bottled water do you recomend pouring into the salt? I personally like to drink Aquafina, but which one will the deer prefer? Perhaps Evian, Dasani, Arrowhead, or Figi? So many different choices!
