LifeFeedsOnLife Report post Posted May 3, 2013 So I've got a couple of buddies who have never hunted before and want me to take them this year. I've always hunted mulies in 27 but being poor college students we are looking at the areas closer to town (20A-24A). My question is would there a better chance at finding a muley or a whitetail in any of these units? I really just want to be able to get them a shot at a deer whatever species or size it is. We'll definitely get out and do some scouting but since I never have hunted whitetail yet or these units I'm curious which species would give us the best odds at finding deer? oz31p Report post Posted May 4, 2013 Good luck. And thank you for interducing new hunters to the sport. If you find the answer to your question you're doing better than most of us. Lol
AZbowhntr Report post Posted May 5, 2013 Well it will probably be easier to get a WT tag for any of those units than a MD tag. I think that will be the first priority. Just getting them a chance to hunt. I don't think there are ever leftover tags for those units. But good luck.
Antmo23 Report post Posted May 5, 2013 There are always left over WT tags for the southern units, put in for some premium mulie tags and see if you get lucky. The left overs are left over for a reason, but with some scouting, you can find them in there.
Norteno Report post Posted May 9, 2013 I've hunted 24A the last 2 years and although we didn't harvest we had a blast. Looks like there are 300 MD tags and 1125 WT tags so you have a better chance of drawing a WT tag in that unit. Although the success numbers are lower in these units, those that do their preseason scouting can be successful. Make sure you can differenciate between the two species because we saw both each time out. Consider 24B as well Good luck on the draw !
dpr64 Report post Posted May 10, 2013 Super dumb question and I never considered it before until filling out the online app for my coues hunt.... It asked me if I wanted to apply for another permit/license. Can one apply for a separate genus such as mule deer for a different time of the year and possibly have 2 hunts? Most likely not I know, but it made me curious.

Yes and No You can place your second through fourth choice's on WT or Muley as long as the hunt numbers are in the same hunt ie first choice hunt 1036 second choice hunt 1086. You can also mix and match archery or rifle but all hunts must be for deer. But you can only draw 1 deer tag. If you draw and don't harvest you could purchase an over the counter tag if any were available.
