COUESAZ Report post Posted September 14, 2006 Does anyone know what the law states about a child riding on the back of your quad while you drive. This year will be my 6 year old sons first hunt and i will be taking the quad for back up transportation. I have a print out from th coconino county seriffs dept saying that to ride double the second rider needs handles of some kind to ride with you. I thought it was only aloud on the X2 quads like polaris and bombardeir just came out with last year. We will be hunting in unit 27 , and the law should read the same as it does in coconino county right. Just curious about it.
Joe Kauffman Report post Posted September 14, 2006 Jade, My parents have had this conversation with their good friend and Sheriff up where they live and they purchased the bolt down "rear seat" for their Sportman's. It's the black cushioned seat with storage boxes on the side and they were told by him that it makes carrying a passenger completely legal (as long as they wear a helmet). Similar to this one: Cabelas Seat It's darn comfortable for the kids too! Hope this helps.
COUESAZ Report post Posted September 14, 2006 That is what this law reads from coconino county. I just will not have the extra seat for him. I do have the hand holds for him as my rack sticks out far enough for him to hold on to. I may get one of those back rests so it will look like he has a seat under him. BASS Report post Posted September 15, 2006 For the most part as long as you are not being an idiot on the quad and are doing like I'm sure you do anyways I don't see you having a problem. We road double on our quads for a long time and never had a problem from anyone.

I am not positive, but pretty sure that when the issue of double riding on quads arises the rule is that in order to ride two people on the quad, it must be a two preson quad. They determine this by the overall length of the quad. This is true at least for riding at the dunes and state trust land. Good luck some times the laws aren't exactly as clear as they should be. muley Report post Posted September 16, 2006 Just make sure he has a helmet, and you'll be fine. That is the one big thing that they look for when writing tickets.
COUESAZ Report post Posted September 16, 2006 He has a helmet. He has his own quad but it will not be on the hunt with us.
CouesWhitetail Report post Posted September 16, 2006 I have been with game wardens on ride alongs when they have cited ATV'ers that had their children on the back of the quad. I think it's illegal to ride two people on a quad unless it is a two person quad. Why don't you call the local game warden and ask them? That way you can get a feel for if or how they might enforce that rule in the area you will be in. Amanda
muley Report post Posted September 17, 2006 Good call Amanda, Some wardens are different then others.
Diamondbackaz Report post Posted September 17, 2006 Look at their own publication : http://www.azgfd.gov/pdfs/outdoor_recreati...tv_brochure.pdf It only says that you can't ride double on streets and highways. Then, at the end, they have "OHV Tips" in which they advise that you shouldn't ride double. If a warden gave me a ticket, I would use their own publication in court. It may be a good idea to carry a copy if they make a stink about it. As far as I'm concern after reading this, you can ride double on Federal lands.
AZLance Report post Posted September 19, 2006 its not the fish cops you need to watch out for, its the tree cops that are hot to write tickets to any one on a quad latley!
Guest AZ>NMcouesaddict Report post Posted September 19, 2006 NM game and fish are also pushing on the ATV laws. In this years regulations, page 9 it even says that riding two people, if the driver is under 18, on a vehicle designed for two is illegal. If that's the case, why purchase a two seater??? You need to check out NM website and dig for there new OHV law. In order to legally operate your atv, you need to pay $50 for two years to be legal while riding in NM. That includes a $30 user fee. Non -residents pay $50, or $23 for a 90 day permit. News to me.

BASS Report post Posted September 19, 2006 I sure do love my RHINO! w00t! Although they do need about another two inches in the tire area so you don't bottom out so much on the really rough stuff.
COUESAZ Report post Posted September 19, 2006 I just wish the rino had a full seat like the ranger. I like the rino the best out of all of them but the seats have held me back so far. I would have to buy two of them for my family. I am betting that unit 27 will be swarmed with quads and Game and fish this year. That is why i am so woried about it. It seems evry year tere are more and more game and fish in that area.
