Canyon Creek on Sunday

Recommended Posts

Sunday morning pwrguy and myself were able to hit Canyon Creek for a few hours. We got on the creek about 6:30 and fished until 10:30. The fishing was really slow. I managed to hook 5 fish and land 3, Rex was able to hook 2 rainbows. The creek is running a little faster than normal and a little dirty. We used a double dropper rig. We caught fish on numerous different nymph's. Black and Brown nymph's worked best. It was really cold at first with the rod guides icing up at each hole, but after a few hours in warmed up and was really nice! Over all it was a really nice day on the water. Thanks for coming with me Rex!

Wow! Nice browns! I haven't fished CC in quite some time.

I used to fish CC a lot before the big fire. I feel the creek has become a better fishery since the fire. The average size of the fish seems bigger and healthier. Unfortunately I’ve been catching more Rainbow’s than I used to, but at least the Brown’s are doing well too.

PS: Hmmm...... Canyon Creek + Turkey Season?? = Cast and Blast??? Could be a fun combo this time of year! ;)

We stopped at a couple of spots and attempted to locate some birds, but nothing answered. While we were getting ready at the truck we heard a bird chirping. A few minutes later I looked across the field and saw a bird walking across it. Looked like it was a Tom, but nor sure. We saw a lot of people camped on the top by the CC turn off. Lot's of Junior's heading out.

Glad to see they finally started hitting and the water clearing a little. My buddy was up there last week and got skunked and he probably knows CC better than anyone I know. Good job and thanks for sharing. :)

I think the Creek would be better in the afternoon. I've always had my best day's fishing the creek from 4pm-10pm. With the cold weather I bet the fish are more active in the late afternoon.

By your pics, looks like below the bridge. Is it still catch and release there?

Yes we fished the Catch & Release Fly and Lure only section. Canyon Creek is located at the top of the rim. It's about an hour North East of Payson. Great Creek. It has a 1 1/2 mile section that is designated Catch & Release. It can be a very good fishing, but the water is usually very clear and the fish can be very spooky. Above the catch and release section the creek is stocked for put and take fishing. Great spot for the kids. The creek is usually really busy during the weekends in the summer month's. Get there early or late and be very stealthy. The Brown's will spook quicker than an old White Tail Buck:) If you catch a fish at Canyon Creek you did something right! Be advised that Canyon Creek is usually a very windy creek to fish!

Yep, ole Adam lived up to his handle, that was one big old brown trout. I had a great time even though Adam caught all the fish :P :D
