mulie hunter Report post Posted September 11, 2006 Went on my first scouting trip this weekend for my Oct. whitetail hunt. Very beautiful country, encountered a creek that was running with little water falls. Noticed the unit had alot of water, wondering how it is in october as we found some nice water holes that would be good if it is drier in Oct.? Only saw six deer , three of which were bucks (2 )-3x3's and a 2x2. The coues are a neat deer, I noticed they run verses the way a mulie kinda pogo's away. Anyway I'm going back in a few weeks, any Idea's as to specific canyons etc.. to glass, P.M. me. By the way AZP&Y the 12x56 nikon monarchs worked great, but I got to get that tripod needed it! elkhunter Report post Posted September 12, 2006 this summer was super wet, almost 10 inches of rain on average along the huachucas, they're still getting rain up to now so there should be plenty of water in oct
COUESAZ Report post Posted September 12, 2006 I had a client from New York that blew a shot on a nice mulei buck because he started laughing at the stotting motion of the buck. He thought the deer was trying to trick us. I told him no that is just what they do when they know you are not going to shoot them.
AZP&Y Report post Posted September 12, 2006 By the way AZP&Y the 12x56 nikon monarchs worked great, but I got to get that tripod needed it! I hear ya... It will help a great deal and make "glassing" much more enjoyable. That Guy I Pm'd you will set you up ... Let me know how the 2nd round of scouting goes. I'll send you a PM on another canyon that may hold some nice bucks. Did you see a lot of UDA (undocumented Alien) traffic? AzP&Y Doug

I'll appreciate that info on that canyon.
ScottAF Report post Posted September 14, 2006 I'll repost the same thing i said to another guy. I have bowhunted this unit many times. One place I have seen quite a few is in Carr Canyon.just south of Sierra Vista. When enter Carr Canyon there will be hadnful houses on your left. More like cabins Not far after that when you start to make a turn there is a little parking lot where hikers, bird watchers, etc. like to park. Not so much in the winter though.Well there is a trail there that heads back to the east and then kinda wines around to the south. But it's always heading upwards for the most part. When your hiking this trail you can see these houses on your left. Some of these houses have fields in there yards and you can almost always every morning see the Bucks feeding with does. After these deer are done the bucks head back into the canyons and into the hills. If you were to get back in the hills away from the houses and roads of course. You could probabley catch one of them beding up or what ever.I have see some really nice one there's.Just quick story also. One January when I was bow hunting there,I was glassing down towards these homes because I didn't go very far back that morning. And this guy came out with a coffe can and started shaking it around with some seed in it or something. And this nice little Buck came running up and started eating out of this man's hand.Which I thought he was doing that deer any justice beacuse some hunter will probabley end up shooting that animal. And not understanding why it didn't run. Take care, and good luck. Scott I have also seen a few by parker Canyon Lake.I just never hunted over there much.
