37a draw odds

Recommended Posts

I know there a couple of you guys on here that have this stuff down to an art. I was wondering if you could tell me what the odds are of drawing a 37a rifle tag? I only have two points and I prefer to hunt archery anyway but I'm just curious. Thanks.

Awesome, those are better odds than I expected. One more quick question, just because I want to know how lucky I really was. I had three or four bonus points for elk, and drew the 156th tag for 6a archery bull, which was my first choice. I think there were 775 tags total and I don't think my 3 or 4 points would've put me in the bonus pass. Did I draw the very first possible tag that I could've drawn?

Yup. You had a good number, probably could have drawn just about anything.

I don't know I should be happy or cry because I didn't put in for a more prestigious unit! Can you explain to me how the random numbers work. I think I follow the rest of the draw process but I don't quite understand how the random numbers are generated and assigned. It seems like if it is truly random, then several applications could end up with the same number.

From my understanding random numbers are generated just like a lottery. The very first application drawn gets #1, second app gets #2 and so on. Each bonus point gets you an extra ticket in the pool so you have a better chance at getting drawn for a better "randomly assigned number." Unless you have enough for the bonus pass which I still don't understand how that part works.

So all the applications go into the initial "lottery" and are drawn out and assigned a number according the order they are drawn. Then the lowest number for each hunt number is given the first tag ( or the first tag outside of the bonus round, depending on if you made it into the bonus round or not ) does that sound about right? How do they determine how many points it takes to get to the bonus round? Is it whatever the lowest number of points that will cover the 20% allotment of tags is? For instance say there are 100 tags, for easy figuring. 20 would go to the bonus pass. And say there 18 applications with 5 or more points and 10 with 4 points. Would 4 points put you in the bonus round in that scenario?

Claret - The information you are looking for is summarized here . . . http://www.azgfd.gov/eservices/BigGameDrawingProcess.shtml

Here is a quick crash course:

Bonus Pass: The first 20% of tags go to the applicants for each hunt with the most BPs, the tags are given to applicants beginning with those holding the most bonus points and moving down the line until the full 20% have been awarded. If there are 100 tags, there would be 20 available for the bonus pass. Lets say that the most points anyone has is 10 and there are 5 guys w/10 points, 10 w/9 points, and 15 w/8 points. The first 5 tags would go to the guys with 10 points, the next 10 would go to the guys with 9 points, and a random drawing of applicants from the 15 guys with 8 points would determine which 5 of them would get the last 5 tags from the bonus pass.

1-2 Pass: All applications are awarded a random # 1 through whatever the total nuber of entry's is. Each applicant is given a # for their application and an additional number for each bonus point. So if I have 3 points I would be assigned a total of 4 random numbers, one for my application and one for each bonus point. They then begin awarding tags by evaluating the first choice and then the second choice for each random #, beginning with the lowest number and concluding with the highest. When they reach your number, if your first choice hunt has tags available you are awarded one, if not they check to see if tags are available for your second choice.

This process is then repeated (including assigning new numbers) for choices 3-4, and then 5th choice.
