6A advise needed

Recommended Posts

This year I will be going on my first elk hunt. The hunt is rifle bull late november -early december. What should I expect wheather wise in this area? Should I bring snow shoes? Also should I be glassing for them or hiking around or road hunting? I am new to this so any advise is helpful.

Thanks, Terry

The weather has always been a lil nasty in 6A. I went on 2 late Oct WT hunts and had rain, hail, biting cold wind, freezing cold nights, sunshine, and pea soup fog, all in the same hunt! Prepare for the worst, and hope it doesn't get wet, because rain will make the roads into a slippery mess. I'd do whatever I could to get away from the roads. You and you're Father are going to be 2 of 825 hunters for that hunt, so do what you can to get away from the masses. Good luck out there!

I had this hunt last year and got sunburnt, helped the year before and we finally got weather on day 6. Pray for weather, if not get ready to put some miles on your boots to do some glassine.. I will be up north with my father and his hunting party, you can pm me if you want and we can talk about some particulars. Picture on my icon is from the late nov 6a hunt had tons of weather that year.

Once you find a area you like be sure to sit on for a bit. With as many hunters that will be there the elk move quite a bit during mid day. That's a hunt you want to be sure to pack a lunch and stay out while most of the other hunters are back in camp.

When there is weather before the hunt I put some miles on the dirt roads and look for their travel patterns in the mud (pray for fresh snow) If find some bull tracks jump out and see where they head. Worked on a few hunts for me.
