6A turkey

Recommended Posts

I plan on heading to 6A for the youth turkey hunt this weekend with my daughter. Has anyone heard toms while out shed hunting? The birds are ready to go down here in southern AZ but I really don't know what to expect up north. This cold front coming in the next couple of days could make it tough. Does anyone know if the forest roads are still closed? . We have about a four hour drive and I wanted to make sure it would be worth the trip. I have seen turkey in the unit during the elk hunts but I don't know if those areas I'm familiar with will be open to travel.

The roads should be open. A friend of mine got a flat tire in 6a this weekend.

All the roads in 5a seem to be open, including the 300 rd. so I would assume 6a roads are also. I have been hearing birds before iit gets light by doing owl calls. Haven't been persuing them after they hit the ground. It's been so windy the last few days I didn't go out. Did hear one bird this AM, hopefully they will fire up for the JR hunt.

Thanks for the advice guys. My daughter has never been to 6A and I can't wait to show her my favorite area to hunt in AZ. She was fortunate enough to draw a rifle bull tag for next season so this ought to get the juices flowing for the November hunt. It's a long way away from elk season but we have been purchasing gear for her and I have modified my 30-06 Remington Sportsmen 78 to fit her LOP. She has a very small frame and I'm trying to make it as comfortable as possible for her in case she gets the opportunity at her first elk. Growing up in PA, I love chasing turkey in NM and AZ during the spring. Great time to get to know an area and pick up some bone. Good luck to all the junior hunter this weekend! Get you some of those THUNDER CHICKENS!
