Tines Report post Posted April 18, 2013 Every unit up here has at least a 350 bull you just need to put In the time looking and when you live In the middle of the elk country It can be a little easiser, 5bn Isn't any better then ,5bs 7w ,8 an 6a except to many tags given out in these two units. Tines, you are being to generous I would guess only 1 or 2 hunters out of ten can score an animal on the hoove close. I see people and score there animals they kill or sheds they find who think they might have a 330-340 bull and It might score 265- 270 I have found three sets of sheds this year in three units that break the 350 mark using a 35 inch spread.and they wenen't In unit 9 or 10 I like being generous... : )
ForkHorn Report post Posted April 18, 2013 If the fronts (G1's) are as long as the nose or extend past the nose you better be shooting!
elkslare Report post Posted April 18, 2013 Thank you everyone for the replies and the pms and all the great help. Its good stuff and I really appreciate it. Tines: No discouragement at all. Good questions I have seen several bulls 350 plus on the hoof. I do agree with you it is alot harder to judge them on the hoof, especially when they come in and you have to make that split second decision. I have hunted elk for thirty years (wich really does not mean much) But love going after big bulls. Few years back my oldest son drew a 6a tag We went in before the season and found 2 bulls over the 350 mark and and killed this one on day 5 of the hunt after passing on several bulls. This was one of the 2 bulls we were looking at.(picture enclosed) You had asked if my son was in the same boat as my wife: the answer is no ,he has killed several elk. And has been in on alot of hunts and bull kills.he is the one that is really going after a larger bull. I ask what kind of bulls are in this unit, Just to see what to expect when we show up for our scouting trip. and what kind of bulls are available in this unit and Just for general info and to talk hunting. As far as my wife goes, She would be very happy with any bull. It is her choice not mine what she shoots. But if I know her she will wait to shoot a 300plus bull the first week. If I can put a good bull in front of her the first couple days that we find in our preseason scouting, it will make her decision that much easier. I am a firm believer in the hunt before the hunt. And you are right altamitly the goal is to have a good time. Thats what it is all about .

azsugarbear Report post Posted April 19, 2013 I have hunted and scouted in 5BN for many years. I am continually amazed at the sheer number of 6x6 bulls that this unit holds. However, most of these 6x6 bulls are young and would go in the 280 to 300 class. I have found that the more mature bulls in 5BN generally have great width and great mass. What they tend to lack is tine length. Expect most mature bulls with great width and mass to go about 320-340. Add some decent tine length to that bull and you start to get 340+. The 350+ bulls are in there, but they are few and far in between the many others you will see.
Cazador Report post Posted April 19, 2013 elkslare, nice bull your son harvested, you mind telling what part of the 6A (North or South) it was taken and year? I think I have some pics of that bull while scouting when I had the tag in 2010 (I'll have to dig them up). We did not see him during the hunt but ended up with a nice ~330-340 class bull. If this is the same bull it was in the pines ~3 weeks before the opener and it looks like your son got him in the PJ's. I'm interested in knowing this information as to I drew 6A again and looking at hunting the PJ's for bigger bulls and to get away from other hunters. Just trying to figure out how big of an area these big bulls roam to give me an idea when I'm scouting and see a nice bull in the pines how far they'll roam if I don't see them during the hunt. Also here are some bulls taken from 5BN in 2011 November rifle hunt that I euro/western mounted for them: Enjoy!
