ADVICE ON QUADS

Recommended Posts

I have a Yamaha Grizzly and a Big Bear and Like both. Out of the two I would by the Grizzly for a few reasons, independent suspinsion and a automatic trans w/engine braking. Engine brakes a really nice on steep hills, and the suspension makes a difference at the end of a long day.

I have a Kawasaki Praire.. It is a several years old and I don't even know if they make it... It is ok.. I would get a model that let you turn off the 4x4... when you are going slow the front end grabs alot..

ALSO... Make sure you get gloves, a helmet and goggles... it makes a difference..

Yes a helmet is a must. Even if you just putt around. Even an open face is beter than just your melon to prtect your brain.

We hauled a guy out of rogers trough area on saturday in the bed of my truck. He road his quad off of a 15 foot cliff. Broken femer bone, dislocated knee ,and a couple broken ribs. we went back in after the abulance got there and brought his quad back to town for him so no one would still it. One thing to remember is to not speed on a one way dirt road with tight corners. This guy told us he was going 50 miles an hour. All it takes is a full size truck around the corner to put you to sleep for ever. I did not buy a sports bike I bought a trail bike. I am glad my 6 and 8 year olds were there to see this. Even though it was a scary deal for them they saw what can take place real fast.

Hey Bill here's my .2 cents, RHINO, RHINO, RHINO! I've used atv's of all sorts for many years now. I started on an old 3 wheeler and have progressed through the years. If you decide to buy a quad I reccomend a 400 or 450 for you. The bigger engines will probably beat you up much more. Honda has long been the most bullet proof bike on the market. Most of these newer bikes are very good as well. For you I would also reccomend a bike with the lowest stance. This will make it feel less tippy. Suzuki makes the lowest sitting quad on the market I believe. BOTTOM LINE IS THIS, YOU WILL FEEL A LITTLE SORE AFTER RIDING ON ANY QUAD ALL DAY! A RHINO WILL NOT BEAT YOU UP AND ALLOW YOU TO CARRY A PASSENGER,GEAR FOR 2, AND A QUIMBY SIZE BULL ELK. SEND ME A PM IF YOUR INTERESTED IN MORE INFO ON A RHINO AND GOOD LUCK ON YOUR DECISION!

Bill, as TLH replied you may want to at least look at the UATV's they seat two, and have a bed. I have both a John Deere Gator and a Deere quad and I feel they can both take you where ever you need to go and they both serve the purpose well. It depends on what you are planning to do with them in the off season or if you want to use them for other purposes. If you are interested in looking at a sales brouchre for more info let me know and I will sent one in the mail. By the way I am not a salesman looking for a sale if it sounds that way just a good way to get info on one.

Thank you everyone for the great advice. The question I have to answer now is whether I would get enough use out of a quad to justify buying one. I really appreciate your help.

Probably not, The one vehicle I use the most is my 97 Jeep wrangler with an automatic transmission. I can drive it on the highway and also offroad. I can take the top and doors off and put it back on when it rains, I can turn on the heater when it gets cold, or the AC when it gets hot. I can throw the wife in the passenger seat and take her along for a ride in the country. I paid $9,000 for this a couple of years ago which would be less than a Rhino. The 97 and newer wranglers have coil springs which ride nice offraod, especially if you install Rancho 9000 adjustable shocks. Adjust the shocks down to zero stiffness and you gently bounce over the rocks.

I have laid it on its side once, and one time it went over the top of me, grinding my helmet into a rock in the road. Fortunetly it kept on rolling and didn't stay on top of me. No speed involved, just very steep uneven terrain. I do, and have ridden some extremely rough roads. I've done a lot of riding over the years. If you ride some of the roads like I do, you would fall of yours too,,,,

I have a 99 dodge deisle 4x4 and a 78 CJ 5 With a new Mega cap in the near future, And i use my quad About equal to the truck. The Jeep is on the side yard And i should just sale the thing because i will never use it again. I am not saying a quad is better than a jeep at all. Just that i do not use mine anymore. I do not like tearing up the vehicle that i payed 30 thousand for when i can do it on my quad that i paid 2200.00 for used. But like i said the quad is in the back of the truck most of the time, But there when i need it. I use it most scouting out new areas for hunting and prospecting. And above all they are just plain fun to ride in the mountains and the desert. We should get a group together and do the outlaw trails in eager. Bill if you want to talk to folks that know ATV's go to www.intrepidexplorers.org

the big difference between a jeep and a rhino is not price, but comfort and speed. I can cover five times as much ground in a day on the rhino as I can my truck or a jeep. Jeeps will go pretty much anywhere but not very quickly an not very smoothly. My advice is to test drive all the options out there and decide for yourself. I've yet to meet someone who does'nt fall in love with the rhino the first time. I know it sounds like I'm a salesperson for these things but I swear to you I'm not. I just love mine and want everyone to know it. The add I put in the classified section on here is not me trying to make a buck. My brother sales them but he's not hurting for money so bad that I've got to beg you guys to buy one. I just think their great even for the price.

I love my quads too, and my duramax diesel, and my jeep. Each one has its advantages and dis advantages. I find the Jeep the most versatile. Ever ride a quad or a rhino when its 14 degrees out? How about going out scouting and you go from place to place and having to go on and off a paved highway. Don't have to trailer it, can if I want to. I guess each to their own....

PS. There is a big difference in the ride of a CJ5 and a coil spring Wrangler....especially if you put on a soft ride Rancho suspension.
