30b coues deer

Recommended Posts

being only 17 i wanted to atleast get drawn this year so i put in for 30b as my 5th choice since i saw that it had 100% draw odds. i have been successful in the last couple of years up north for elk and mule deer but have never hunted souther arizona.

i looked on azgfd and saw looked at the where to hunt areas, they said that the coues deer might be( either the dragoon or mule mountains and the rolling hills between them)

also i bought a map from azgfd and it seems the only area i could hunt would be the dragoon mt.s and some areas around them because of all the private land. the map also show the elevation of the area.

does anyone know what eleveaton or type of vegatation coues deer stay around. and has anyone spotted deer in this area.

The dragoons are not easy to hunt, as most of the access is private, and or off limits. About the only access I know of thats real easy is south along the RR tracks out of dragoon. That accesses the west side of the mountain. I dont know if they are still doing it but the 4/ ranch had one of the sign in programs going couple of years ago. You can either hang out on the road and glass the mountain looking for coues, or you can get up high, and start finding the little beasts. Although that range is not for the faint of heart. its steep and rocky. And there are mulies in there also so be careful what your shooting at.

Good luck.

i heard alot about them being inaccessable. is it just becase alot of the land is private and there is locked gates or what? my map from azgfd shows all the area that is private, trust land, and coronado forest. i tought you could hunt national forest and trust lands or is it just that you cant get to them?

China camp is a Quad area. It can be good if you can get up in there.

A jeep or other 4X4 can easily get to the basin where the camp is. If you want to go to the top of the peak, then a quad is recomended.

I was in your same situation about 11 years ago, missed a beautiful whitetail buck in middle march canyon on a sunday morning just across the main creek, the deer are there not many but the one's that are, are fairly good size and smart. You need to scout at least once. Nice area with some history. Good luck.
