missedagain Report post Posted September 8, 2006 Welcome to the state & site! Where are you from? There are a lot of places to buy salt, it mostly depends on what kind and quantity you want. If I were you I would probably not worry about salt this late in the game as it often takes deer awhile to get used to coming to a mineral lick. Also you do not want to start a salt lick without doing some pretty thorough scouting first or you are just polluting the dirt. Finally, even though 23 is open in the late archery season sitting salt is usually not the best tactic that time of year (in my opinion). A better bet for this years season would be to sit water or spot n stalk especially in the late season. A side benefit of spot n stalk is that you will get to know a lot more country faster and be able to find good spots that you can start a lick on for next fall. Red Rabbit Report post Posted September 8, 2006 Charlie, Welcome. I usually purchase the trace mineral salt in 50# bags from a feed store, dig a hole and pour in the salt ( I find half a bag is enough), and dissolve with 5 gallons of water. I find the granulated works better as no one can remove as it is not a block, and is less used/attracted by cattle. Plus, it dissolves into the soil, dirt better to establish a permanent site. Find a trail in a hidden/off the human trail area to establish your lick. Next to a tank will just invite other hunters. It may be too late for this fall to establish a good pattern, but put it in anyway and you will have established it for next season. But then again, near those rubs you may have a buck find it and use it tomorrow. Go for it and good luck. Doug~RR
TAM Report post Posted September 8, 2006 Sitting salt in the late season is an extremly effective way of hunting coues deer. There has been a lot of discussion in the past about how to start a salt hole, where, when, and what kinds of salt. You may want to do a search. In my opinion the two most important factors are the location, and a good trail camera. The rest is easy. As far as the salt is concerned I like to start with 20-40 pounds of salt pellets with a bag of deer cocaine poured over the top, then doused with a gallon or so of water. Mix it all up and you're done. Before you pour out the salt make sure there's a good tree with clear shooting lanes nearby for you to sit in. Don't forget to put up the camera on a nearby tree so you get some pic's of all the animals coming in. If you did your scouting and found a good location you'll be really surprised how quickly the deer will find the salt. Don't worry if you only get does at first, once the rut starts the bucks will follow the does in. Good luck!
