punkrcker1344 Report post Posted September 7, 2006 I was wondering if crossbow was concidered archery? Will it work for the non permit archery deer tag? I have trouble shooting past 50 yards and was wanting to sell my bow and switch to cross bow. But have yet to decide if i want to sell my bow. --- You all are thinking im a woman for changing to crossbow!
KGAINES Report post Posted September 7, 2006 No it is not legal for archery.
grizzly Report post Posted September 7, 2006 Alright time to change your screen name! 50 yards is a long shot, I wouldnt take a shot at an animal any farther than that. If you feel like you need to shoot farther then maybe look at the bow you are shooting now, is it an older bow? Many of the newer ones are incredibly accurate to longer distances. I have a 7 pin sight on mine and routinely practice out to 80 yards.
punkrcker1344 Report post Posted September 7, 2006 I bought my bow in 2000 or 2001. it is a PSE the Beats pro series. When hunting over labor day weekend i couldnt get any closer than 80 yards from a deer. My problem in shooting is i shake and im not accurate. So thats why i was thinking of a cross bow
bowhuntinmaniac Report post Posted September 7, 2006 A crossbow is less accurate and has less power over 50 yds than your compound, maybe you need to practice yer stalking skills.
BASS Report post Posted September 7, 2006 Yeah, head out sometime and try to only put a stalk on an animal. That is a huge rush for me. During the summer months I will head out and stalk Elk for fun with a camera. What seems to work very well for me is something I learned from azhuntnut. Get on your belly and crawl where there is no cover. It doesn't always work, but in this last summer I have gotten to with in 30 yards or so of both Bulls, Cows and a herd of about five mule deer bucks about six or seven different times. Once you are that close though, it get's kind of boring waiting for them to wander off so you don't let them wise up to hunters getting so close. What kind of hunting are you doing? Are you sitting in a stand, or blind, or are you out hiking around? Are the deer passing by, or hanging out in the same general area where you might be able to change your attack? Give us a little info about how you are aproaching this problem and I'm sure we can help you change something to get closer. If all else fails, I guess you could go rambo and just take off charging them yelling really loud hoping they go into shock until you get closer.
punkrcker1344 Report post Posted September 7, 2006 It mostly depends on if there is good water tanks around. I prefer sitting at water but this past hunt i was walking around and stalking... Its frustrating trying to get close to the deer. I take off my shoes and very very very slowly stalk the deer. It takes me minutes to get a few feet. I cant shoot accuratly past 50 yards... - Is a crossbow concidered archery? Can i use my archery tag with a crossbow?
Redbeard Report post Posted September 7, 2006 OK you can't be serious? I know you are a young guy but come on? So since you couldn't get closer than 80 yards on opening weekend you figure you just need to get a longer range weapon? I'm sorry but that is just so wrong. Bowhunting is supposed to be challenging. The "sport" in it is that you HAVE TO GET CLOSE! Heck, all hunting is supposed to be challenging! Please quit bowhunting now and buy a rifle. Please! You will enjoy the easier success and will not give bowhunters a bad image.
BASS Report post Posted September 7, 2006 BH12, No, you can not use a crossbow for archery only hunts. You can only use them for HAM (handgun, archery, muzzleloader) hunts or for rifle hunts. You say you shake when holding at full draw. What draw weight are you shooting? Maybe if you crank your bow down a few pounds you might have an easier time holding at full draw without loosing your currect specs too much.

muledeerarea33? Report post Posted September 7, 2006 the only legal way to use a crossbow during regular archery season is if you are disabled and are not able to use conventional methods. my dad got his cross bow permit but took a long time to do so he had to get special permits from G and F and have a few docs examine him
DesertBull Report post Posted September 7, 2006 You can use a crossbow during the general season. Maybe even the ML'er season, not sure about that though.

scout4u Report post Posted September 7, 2006 it may be that u need to practice more on stalking insted if shooting.
