Deep sea fishing Hawaii

Recommended Posts

Just found out I'm headed to Hawaii for a few months for work. Anyone here been deep sea fishing there? Any recommendations for charters?

went a few times when stationed there, all we did was ride around on the boat and get drunk, fish weren't cooperating

there will be a bunch of different charters to choose from, they also had "Booze Cruises", ride out on a boat for dinner and drinks, we enjoyed those too.

Have you gone spearfishing before? Easy to learn? I think I'm going to bring my bow and try out the feral hog hunting as well.

Buy a spear gun and fins/mask

I've been out with these guys. We caught Marlin and Yellow Fin. Once you leave port they will drop sabiki's for bait and fishing starts about 5 miles out from shore. Get some scopace and be in good shape as an hour in the chair fighting a marlin will wear you down. We fished with big Penn Internationals and 130# Mono.

I have a pole spear and have done a little in the Caribbean. It's bow hunting under water and it is a blast. Like anything, it takes some time to get a feel for it, but it's not a long learning curve like shooting a bow. I'll be doing some more in Belize this summer for sure.

Been out twice in Maui had a great nap, saw some very cool whales, and the flying fish were neat.

Hawaii is a trophy fish trip not a qty trip. You may want to find a boat that will stay closer and go after mahi if you can. Be very clear with them on what you are after or the capt will take you way out looking for a monster.
