3Coues3 Report post Posted April 4, 2013 Hey all, This is my first early archery bull tag and its in 5bn and have a few questions for any one that would like to give there 2 cents. I will be doing my homework with scouting trips, maps, and some boot leather so I am sure I will find out soon enough but I just had a few questions to start off with. I normally hunt Unit 1 and 27 and just don't know what to expect in a sense of herd size/ bull to cow ratio/ general size of bulls. What could I expect to see or shoot? If I were only able to take one week off of work, would you recommend the first week or second? Thanks, Byron
GJMauro12 Report post Posted April 4, 2013 I had that tag two years in a row and got into a TON of bulls. haven't been in the area for a couple years now but if i looked at a map I could probably start you off in a few good areas. I didn't hunt the burn very much but I wish i would have. If you want to shoot me a PM I'll try to help out with what i can.
ForkHorn Report post Posted April 4, 2013 It's tough to say but it seems like the second week is normally the better of the two weeks. However, every year is different. A cold spell during the first week or a heat wave during the second could easily make the first week the better of the two. 5B N is not considered a "trophy" unit but I don't think you will have any problem finding a respectable 6x6. AverageJoe Report post Posted April 4, 2013 Lots of good bulls all over that unit. I prefer the more northern portions of the units. 350 bull is very doable.
cosninocanines Report post Posted April 4, 2013 Think Rim! Anderson mesa holds a lot of good elk herds water will be key if it's a dry summer and the "burn" has elk all night long you just have to catch them coming or going. The "burn" look at your topo map and find Yellow Jacket Canyon scout the rim top and bottom from the power line to the canyon. Good Luck tough (but fun) hunt.

out2hunt Report post Posted April 7, 2013 West side of Diablo Canyon, locate the water at the southern most end of the canyon. Set up deadfall ground blind, if it isnt still there, and hunt first light and late afternoon. Be patient and you will shoot a decent bull. 30 to 40 yard shots are available on average. Bonus is you can get a vehicle close to make the pack out about 300yards. Have Fun!

cosninocanines Report post Posted April 8, 2013 Be sure and check road status, 5B is set up as no off road recovery of elk, and you will need to know where you can go and not go. Here is a link to some road maps I placed in another topic scroll down to 5B. http://www.coueswhitetail.com/forums/topic/32658-coconino-forest-travel-management-plan/ They may have better maps now but the original maps the fs handed out were worthless. Good Luck in your scouting and on the hunt.
