Recommended Posts

I'm looking for an elk hunting guide for my Dad & I. 2 on 1 guided. Really want Father to get a bull. Not trophy hunters. Cheapest I've found is $3600. Anybody know someone else cheaper that does a good job. Just looking @ options& really want to see Pops get his 1st bog game.:)

Thanks,

Gut Pile

Do your homework if you are looking for a cheap outfitter. The good ones charge what they charge for a reason, and they stay booked. The last thing you want is to pay somebody to guide you on your hunt that ruins it for you. Since it sounds like you're not trophy hunting then make sure you are able to spend quality time with your father during the hunt. Have fun and enjoy the hunt...

You should look into wards outfitters, he is a sponsor on here. Top notch guides and first class service and accomodations!

If you aren't trophy hunting, just do your homework on the unit ... maybe get a couple of buddies to come along and help out. Nothing like spending time with family and friends in the outdoors. The actual "hunting" is the fun of it ... killing something is just icing on the cake.

Good luck to you and your Pop. Hope you get a nice one.

We have several quality elk outfitters that sponsor this site. You can check them all out by looking at the button ads on the lefthand margin of the main home page of CouesWhitetail.com http://www.coueswhitetail.com/ You can't go wrong with any of them and you are helping those that continue to support this website!

Find year round water sources, work topographical maps to determine bedding areas, place a couple cameras strategically between point a and b and at water source or salt lick. Enjoy the half a year you have to wait to hunt getting to know the unit and the game residing within it. Those drives with dad up north to check cameras and spending the mornings glassing the bedding areas are the moments that create a wonderful experience. The next six months can and will afford you the opportunity to find and mark shooting spots, blind locations, and sources of food and water. I envy you in a way that some cannot understand as I lost my father to a car accident when I was 17. All of our Blessings, from my Family to yours, on the hunt of a lifetime. Ken

P.S. Mullins if I had the money and desired a trophy class bull. I believe they have created a fantastic reputation built on being Good People not just Great Hunters.

It is hard to recommend an outfitter if we don't know where you drew... We only guide elk and deer in the units that are right next to us or that we live in because we spend literally 100's of days a year in the woods hunting, scouting, horn hunting, and recreating in the units we hunt. I believe the best way to show your hunter a great hunt is to have a better and more personal understanding of the unit, the access, and the game in it. Example: I have hunted, trapped, horn hunted, fished, and camped in units 5a, 5b, 6a for the last 30+ years and can still today help locate a 340 type late bull without even setting foot in a unit just by giving GPS cords to one of my fav spots... and I spend 100+ days a year in the woods of unit 23 (hunting, scouting, and learning for the last 1/2 dozen years) and live in unit 22. While my hunting partner and my other best Pal spent literally Hundreds of days a year in the woods of 22 and adjoining units.... so as far as central AZ we are hard to beat... but I would never ask you to hire me in unit 10 or unit 1... even though I know I can go and kill you a bull there.

Cost is another thing... you want a guy to hunt as hard on the last day as he did on the first day and that means he and his gear is going to need to be still making the same wage (EX: when you hunt with me I have nearly $30K of equipment in the woods abusing the crap out of it for days before your hunt and all during your hunt). Also depending on the unit most of my hunters come home to cabin accommodations, hot showers, porcelain stool, home cookin' and a clean laundry.

A great example of getting what you pay for in a hunt is this story: I had a 2 on 1 late hunt booked in 2011 with 2 great guys, one of which (the 1st shooter) was having some mobility issues with a foot and ankle (it was kicking our butt). On day 3, I drove him to town to find some better foot wear (which helped). On the 5th day I loaded them up and drove 2+ hrs in the dark and killed the old Giant 5pt that Wild Heritage Taxidermy just posted the mount of. On day 7, (last day) I walked the last hunter 2 miles in the dark to a canyon that I knew would still have bulls and he killed a 310ish bull in snow flurries an hour after daybreak… It was so cold and miserable we had to build a fire to process the bull and got out of the woods with the cape and all the meat we could muster by late afternoon. We got the bull checked in at the Taxi and at the meat shop that day. However, my packer (I always have a packer on a 2 on 1) and I had to wait out a nasty winter storm and could not return for the remaining meat till 3 days after we killed the bull. We then hiked the 4 mile round trip in 6-12 inches of snow,(slipped, tripped, and fell) I mean packed the nearly frozen, remaining meat out and got it to the butcher shop so that the entire elk could be processed at the same time. All told I had over 2 full weeks (17days) invested in this success story… I now have two more friends/clients for life… and another great story for around the fire… sure I had way better bulls on video than what we took that hunt, but that is why they call it hunting and not killing…and yes I hunted as hard (harder) the last days of the hunt. But that fully outfitted 2 on 1 hunt was $9K ($4500 per man)… and I was just told by those gents that if the tag comes again this year they have their deposit money ready.

I hunt for people because I love being out there and it is a thing of Pride to me… however I have to make money while doing it, (same as any job)....and any really good guide does, too. I am not trying to “make a name for myself"… I am as far in the hunting world as I ever wanna be… I want my hunters to become friends not numbers… and I wanna hunt with them again (well most of them, HaHaHa). I only want to hunt a few guys a year because I want to give them 110% and love it at the end still.

So chose a guy based on his knowledge of the unit, and his motives…. Not his price. Good luck and Congrats on the Tag!
