Diamondbackaz Report post Posted May 13, 2004 Looking at the draw odds for last year in the back of the regs, the draw odds for the November hunts are down to 75%. It use to be in the 90% to 100% range which made it a good 2nd choice to a first choice December. I have never been denied a whitetail tag but I am sweating it now. May have to consider a October second choice to get a high chance of draw. What a bummer//
Rembrant Report post Posted May 13, 2004 It's hard to take. I was part of the 25% last year. Tends to leave me with little patience for the fiddle farters that draw and then decide to paint their porch instead, or "the drive's too long for a mediocre deer". The internet application doesn't help. Now it's way to easy for a beer party at someone's house to turn into an application fest. Said it before: Make everybody pay up front. Require everybody to PASS a hunter safety course. Then the deer hunters will be separated from the non-serious folks and the anti's. Just too many folks in this state to make applying so easy. Guest Ernesto C Report post Posted May 13, 2004 Yes, I was really sorprise last year,I dont know if you guys noticed but every year there was always left over permits always;but last year there was only one unit if I remember right with left over permits, when usually there used to be 3 or 4 units with left over permits. Yes I know there are hundreds of "antis" out there applying so we dont get a tag Why they dont live and let other people live?? If they dont like to hunt so be it but there is people that like to hunt so let them hunt. It's a personall choice. Oh Lord I'll leave everything in your hands,I know you will tell me when and where to hunt I know you'll decide if I get a tag or not and I'll respect your decision but bless my friends with their dream tag in the name of your son Jesus. Amen. I agree every body that hunts and/or own guns should have a hunter safety course. Thank You. Ernesto C.
Rembrant Report post Posted May 13, 2004 You are right Ernesto. Good perspective check. I will have a good year no matter what I draw. I shouldn't let dumb things steal my peace. You da man Ernesto! Mike
coues addict Report post Posted May 13, 2004 Ernesto I love your prayer man. Thats exactly what we all need to do is leave it up to the Lord. I have always applied for the October 4 day hunt as my second choice because I believe it helps my odds, but, Who Knows? I like Rembrandt`s idea On the hunter safety too. Myself and my son have taken both Ca. and Az. hunter safety courses. I learned some new and different things from each course. I totally agree with Mike`s Idea about paying upfront. I think thats one of the biggest reasons for the lack of extra tags. It is just way to easy for the anti`s and the (not so serious guys) to get a tag. Oh Lord please help me to keep all this in perspective! Amen. Coues addict
Red Rabbit Report post Posted May 13, 2004 One of these years, I would like to be blessed with a late Kaibab or strip tag, so I put that #1. I could put a December hunt second and have a 20% chance of hunting, or skip Dec. and put in for a Nov hunt second choice. I like the Nov hunt since it encompasses two weekends and is not quite as hot. Don't we wish that there were more than two choices for the first round of the draw? Sumthin bout having a cake. More D Report post Posted May 14, 2004 I agree, I also beleive that we should pay up front. Internet aps were great at first but then it became too easy for the half campers/hunters. I happens every year, my friends and family see my excitment for the upcoming hunt(HOPEFULLY) and want to "tag" along. Most have never hunted, don't have a rifle, or any camping equipment. It is hard because I want othersespecially my friends and family to enjoy what I REALLY LOVE TO DO and we NEED more hunters in general. I tell them that we should go camping any other time other than hunting season so that I can see with my own eyes the type of person I am dealing with. We all know that hunting is alot of responsibilty, and I won't lose my hunting rights be cause of some one elses OOPS. Anti's buying tags does not really bother me. I figure it is a way for them to directly make a donation to what they are trying to stop. Each anti donating $48 would be a great thing! BEST OF LUCK TO ALL IN THE DRAW!!! Red Rabbit Report post Posted May 14, 2004 In looking at the draw odds in the HUNT ARIZONA book from G&F that gives data for the last 5 years, many of the October hunts filled in the first draw as shown by the less than 100% draw odds. With this years reduction in tags, the odds will be worse, but still a lot better than for elk, antelope, sheep, or muleys. Ernesto- We'll keep knocking on heaven's door to unit 12,13- and hope that G&F doesn't give us the snake, aka pink slip. I do not have a problem with hunters of lesser zeal putting in for quality tags. They probably enjoy the total hunt experience as much as we do. If one decides to mow the grass instead of hunting, then it is a waste of a tag and a crime against other hunters. While they may not harvest as many deer, this just means that G&F is able to issue more tags to meet any harvest objective. If tags were only issued to die-hard hunters that succeed more, fewer tags would be issued. In regards to being able to use a credit card to apply, I am for it. We all dream of being drawn for sheep and elk hunts. With the low draw odds, we are sometimes forced to put in out of state with the exorbantly high nonresident fees. If I had to put thousands up front to still have a slim hope of drawing, I couldn't do this financially. I think that the high price of nr tags is limiting a lot of hunters from the chance of hunting. We should have an affordable chance at a dream hunt and not kill the dream with the high fees. Is hunting becoming a sport for the rich at the exspence of the less wealthy who have the same passion? I keep recalling an editorial written by Dwight Shuh in Bowhunter mag a few years ago about killing the dream. Doug/RedRabbit
TREESTANDMAN Report post Posted May 14, 2004 I agree Red Rabbit. I prefer having the G&F take $5/app instead of taking the amount for the whole tag and then refunding it if I am not drawn. If I don't get drawn for a rifle tag, that just means I get to spend more time w/ my bow.
TREESTANDMAN Report post Posted May 14, 2004 I bet if they shortened the application deadline that would weed out a lot of the less serious hunters and procrastinators. Of course there would be a lot of unhappy hunters and young boys and girls who look forward to all year their daddy's taking them hunting.
