CO out of state elk experience?

Recommended Posts

After botching my AZ elk app I have been looking at other states. CO seems fairly reasonable and I have a couple friends who live there who hunt. I looked at the regulations online a little bit and my head started to hurt. I was hoping for some advice from anybody who has hunted there out of state. My goal would be to hunt cow elk during the first rifle season in October. I am wondering if there are over the counter tags, or if I will need to put in for a draw. I saw the deadline is in April, so I still have some time.

I have hunted in SW Colorado for rifle cow elk 5 of the last 7 years. The units that I hunted were 71, 74 and 711 and they were all draw units. I hunted the 4th hunt and found it much more difficult than any AZ or NM bull or cow elk hunt that I have ever been on. I guess that I keep going back because it is a real hunt! I recommend it.

I've hunted southern Colorado and have tagged out every time. Love hunting there! Great meat hunts! Not cheap though.

Check the forums on www.accuratereloading.com and www.24hourcampfire.com

Non-residents who have hunted in Colorado for years are urging others to boycott the state to protest its governor recently signing several anti-gun measures into law. The Outdoor Channel also has announced that it will stop filming hunts in Colorado because of those laws.

Colorado's resident hunters are saying that the state's politics are dominated by liberals who live along the front range after moving there from California over the past few decades.

I find it interesting that Colorado is like Arizona in that most of its people reside in urban areas and that rural residents have little say over their destinies. Fortunately for those who think as we do, conservatives still control our legislature.

We can expect that to change as more people from blue states, Mexico, and Central America move to our urban areas.

Utah has a separate draw for anterless tags that you can still get in and keep your money out of Colorado

Or idaho...otc archery bull during the rut.

+1 Head to ID. Just don't expect an AZ type hunt.

It has been awhile since I hunted Colorado. I did take a 5x5 bull off the breaks of the Grand Mesa, and also missed an opportunity at a bull and nice buck in unit 711. Unit 711 was CROWDED....hunters everywhere. Lots of Aspen and Oakbrush, as well as Pondersosa in 711

A big thanks to huntjunkie for sending some advice my way. After screwing up my Arizona app I was almost shaking before I hit the submit button on a non-refundable $600 charge to hunt elk this October in Colorado. It is to bad about their governor, but this hunt worked out to perfectly to pass up. It is during my week off of work, and my old hunting buddy from Arizona now lives there and he is going to hunt with me.
