A case in point can be seen with the big herd of elk everyone going to Big Lake sees at the junction to Sunrise Lake/Ski Lodge/Sheep's Crossing above my cabin. Before cattle are brought in, it is nothing to see 150 to 250 elk at daylight from the road at that spot. When there are cattle there, you'll be lucky to see more than a dozen or so there. 300WBYMAG Report post Posted September 2, 2006 It would seem to be the same to me from my experience, except this summer. I was out filming looking for a specific bull and in the large field there were over 200 head of elk and close to 100 cattle. There was probably about a 100 yard spacing between the two groups, but they didn't seem to mind too much. In fact there were two bulls grazing among the cattle. I have hunted 5bn a lot in the past and I have found that the elk do avoid the cattle. But not to the extent of what you would think. Many times I have watched elk move off from cattle, but they would only move through the closest cover to keep them out of their line of site. Well at least that has been my experience in 5bn in the eastern ranch areas.
Buckhorn Report post Posted September 3, 2006 I've killed two nice Bulls out of 5B South (love that area) and from my experiance I've found that if you can get in the pasture the cattle have just moved out of you can really find some got size herds feeding on the second and third bites. Best case is give the previous pasture one or two weeks. Other than that the Elk don't move out of the larger pastures they just move to locations that the cows are not in (side slopes, rough ridges and good canyons). Did I say I love 5B South!!! ultramag Report post Posted September 14, 2006 buckhorn 5bs is where I have been scouting, Last weekend all i saw were cattle,I am going again this weekend to a different spot I hope to have better luck. A month ago elk everywhere, add cattle and no elk to be found a little frustrating. makes me wonder why I even waste my time scouting sometimes. This always happens to me.
