NM_Shedder Report post Posted February 24, 2013 Found this yesterday hiking with my dad. This deer broke his head. What I think happened is his antler was starting to detach and since it was a late rut this year he was fighting and he broke the nub. Look at the base of the antler to see what I mean. Guest 300ultramag. Report post Posted February 24, 2013 could you assume he probably died from this? Amanda?
NM_Shedder Report post Posted February 24, 2013 I have no idea. He could have died. If not he's got one heck of a headache.
kwp Report post Posted February 25, 2013 I've found quite a few sheds like this over the years. Seems like it is most commonly mule deer. Not sure what happens to the animal, maybe just some funky antler growth in the future.
cohntr6 Report post Posted February 26, 2013 If that is a fresh shed, I would say the buck is fine but might have some funky growth next year on that right side. Jeff
CouesWhitetail Report post Posted February 26, 2013 Wow, I have never seen a shed like that. Probably not fatal because the pedicle is elevated above the top of the skull so that piece on the shed would be part of the pedicle and not the top of the skull. But that is interesting for sure! Shed hunt in there next year and see if his next shed does the same thing.
