This Had to Hurt

Found this yesterday hiking with my dad. This deer broke his head. What I think happened is his antler was starting to detach and since it was a late rut this year he was fighting and he broke the nub. Look at the base of the antler to see what I mean.

I have no idea. He could have died. If not he's got one heck of a headache.

I've found quite a few sheds like this over the years. Seems like it is most commonly mule deer. Not sure what happens to the animal, maybe just some funky antler growth in the future.

If that is a fresh shed, I would say the buck is fine but might have some funky growth next year on that right side.

Wow, I have never seen a shed like that. Probably not fatal because the pedicle is elevated above the top of the skull so that piece on the shed would be part of the pedicle and not the top of the skull. But that is interesting for sure! Shed hunt in there next year and see if his next shed does the same thing.
