House Bill 2554, introduced by Representative John Kavanagh (R-23), received a “Do-Pass” recommendation with a 5 to 2 vote. This bill would allow law-abiding citizens to carry a concealed handgun for self-defense in any public buildings that lack adequate security. HB 2554 is now eligible for a final vote in the House of Representatives while HB 2234 must be approved next by the House Judiciary Committee.

 

2554 would be a significant step towards reducing the number of “gun-free zones” that are so often the targets of crime. Under this bill, any government or public building that wishes to prohibit the carrying of concealed firearms for self-defense would be required to screen all visitors for weapons. This would ensure that ALL people who enter the buildings are disarmed, not just the law-abiding citizens who choose to follow the law. If a building lacks the adequate security measures necessary to disarm all visitors, then law-abiding citizens would be allowed to carry a firearm to protect themselves while visiting that particular building. The NRA has supported similar legislation in past sessions and will continue to support these types of proposals.

I had not seen that one, it kinda takes care of the issue without coming right out and saying that "teachers" can pack. Just gives the choice if a person wants to pack or not.

I think that having armed security officers at the school is a good idea. A better idea would be to have these officers be current or former police officers. Not only are they trained, but what good role models, especially to the elementary level kids.

 

I can think of several professions that have had legislative mandates (here we want this done so you do it) passed on to them, teachers are no different. But having 'gun free zones' only beg for trouble.

 

Firearms training in the police academy is 2 weeks long. I would think that should be the minimum for someone starting out. A re-qualification at least once a year would also be a minimum.

This guns stuff fueled by the media is not about solving the actual problem. There are many ways to configure buildings to stop intruders, also there are non lethal options such as rubber bullets, pepper spray, etc. Nobody is talking about real solutions just "gun control". The liberals are not interested in anything but their political agenda. They are dancing in the blood of the children, giddy that now they can enact their gun control.

Here is a perfect example of what is happening in our schools. Many people have given there lives to protect our freedom, and what our flag represents......and there are people like this stomping on it.
