jcarter Report post Posted February 11, 2013 So I have never camped In more than a few inches of snow so I need a little advice. First are any forest roads around Mormon lake(south of) going to be open two weeks from now? Also I will be using a wall tent with a stove, should I remove all the snow under the tent or leave some. Any other advice will be appreciated. Thanks Andy

deercrazy Report post Posted February 12, 2013 I would remove the snow from under the floor and put down tarps. The heat from the stove will definately melt the snow. Use the snow around the outside of the tent as an insulator. In scouts in Michigan, we dug down to dirt, then piled snow back onto the area where we dug. Then you take lots of 1 foot long stick, and put them in the pile all over. You then tunnel into the mound and keep scraping snow from the inside until you hit the sticks. we slept 4 kids in there all night with out heat, it stayed about 50 degrees inside just from out body heat. ctafoya Report post Posted February 12, 2013 I camped in the snow a few times. Most important thing is keeping your clothes dry, or pack a lot of extras. Last snow trip we made the kids not only went through all their clothes within two hours, they also lost all the shoes.
muledeerarea33? Report post Posted February 12, 2013 I try to sleep in the back of the truck whenever I can, I'm not a tent fan. (Have owned 2 tents for years and never use them) throw a tarp over the bed rails and your good. I've been up in 27 where I grew up in 2-3 feet of fresh snow, it just insulates you, haha hard to get outa bed though!!

In fact, most roads on the Rim will be closed and usually don't open until Spring. http://www.fs.usda.gov/detailfull/coconino/alerts-notices/?cid=stelprdb5339811&width=full http://www.fs.usda.gov/detailfull/coconino/alerts-notices/?cid=stelprdb5341627&width=full

tjhunt2 Report post Posted February 12, 2013 Do not put your tent under any tree. It may only snow or rain once but it will continue to rain on you for days. TJ

MULEPACKHUNTER Report post Posted February 13, 2013 http://www.princeton.edu/~oa/winter/wintcamp.shtml Here is a webpage from Princeton on this subject that has everything you could ever need. If the roads are closed grab some snow shoes and head on in.
cosninocanines Report post Posted February 13, 2013 Stoneman Lake road is the only open road finding a place to pull off could be a problem. The rain we had last month melted most of the snow pack but the last few storms have helped the snow pack build back up. All in all though theres not much snow out there.
THE RIFLEMAN Report post Posted February 13, 2013 What are you wanting to camp in that area for! What are you hunting up there this time of year other than predators?? I have camped in the snow plenty using my wall tent a wood burning stove and propane heaters! Nice and toasty as long as the fire is going! I always take a chainsaw....We even have had a tent set up for hot showers ....Setting a comfortable camp takes a little work snow or no snow! Bivouacking in the snow for one or two nights is no big deal if you have a warm bag & a a tarp! Any more than that it will be uncomfortable!!!!!
jcarter Report post Posted February 13, 2013 The wife wants to camp in the snow . and I want to try the new stove out. that's really the only area I'm familiar with. any other suggestions for a different spot with access to the snow?
6ANut Report post Posted February 13, 2013 Not sure if Lake Mary road is open or not but you can take that road into Morman Lake. The 209 road that surrounds Morman lake is a paved road with areas that you can pull off and set up camp, if its open. Probably gonna be a little muddy but that is going to be your best bet of seeing snow. Their wont be much snow around Stoneman Lake rd unless it snows a few days before you head north.
